DC--- 11th pic down in your 3/2 post.......
Is that Phalandopsis Little One? If not, it's a dead ringer.

DirtyCoconuts 03-12-2021 02:02 PM

that is the seidria japonica

it looks a lot like what you mentioned as well bc it is the parent of that cross!! great eye

Mr.Fakename 03-12-2021 02:34 PM

I also think it's Phal Little One, you probably have a wrong label DC.

Roberta 03-12-2021 02:40 PM

2 Attachment(s)
These are mine, I think my labels are correct... (Little One looks halfway between its two parents, if anything more like the Hygrochilus parishii/Phal hygrochila parent) So it isn't Sedirea japonica...but not so sure about Vandopirea (Phalaenopsis) LIttle One either though I have seen photos with a lot of variation so maybe.

DirtyCoconuts 03-12-2021 04:18 PM

It’s from marlows. Jim’s usually on point.

Keysguy 03-12-2021 05:58 PM

DC-Mine came from Jim as well. Maybe 5-6 years ago?
The tag is Vanda Little One which I believe is now classified as "Phalandopsis".

Here's a pic of mine from last year as right now in spike but not open yet.

Roberta 03-12-2021 06:07 PM

Vandopirea Little One is now a Phalaenopsis because of the reclassification of its parents... Sedirea japonica is now Phal. japonica, and Hygrochilus parishii (which before that was Vandopsis parishii hence the nothogenus Vandopirea) is now Phal. hygrochila. So... with both parents now being Phalaeopsis, there aren't any more genera to put into the brew... Phalaenopsis it is. A really nice primary hybrid... mine is very fragrant, blooms twice a year, and lives outdoors even in my decidedly NOT tropical environment (as do its parents)

DirtyCoconuts 03-12-2021 06:38 PM

Bummer. I am glad to know what it is but that ain’t what I was sold

Roberta 03-12-2021 06:48 PM

Any one can make a mistake... I have gotten mis-identified plants from the best of vendors... and they usually will at least corroborate an ID... I have never asked for a refund since I have been happy with what I got even if it wasn't what was intended. I did once get a free plant because of a mis-labeling. So worth at least bringing it to their attention. Could have been a whole batch mis-labeled, they may want to follow up with THEIR source.

DirtyCoconuts 03-12-2021 08:27 PM

Yeah I am not looking for any kind of freebie. Just confirming the id and then a source for a real japonica lol

I emailed Jim and sent a pic

Ask Andy... the website shows "unavailable" but I'd be really surprised if he didn't have some. Also Diamond Orchids (Peter T. Lin) shows availability. I'd buy from either in a heartbeat.

neophyte 03-12-2021 11:13 PM

Wow, do you just grow the Restrepia outdoors? It can tolerate that sort of heat?

Keysguy 03-13-2021 07:41 AM

DC---- sorry if I ruined your day bud. I didn't realize I was asking a loaded question.

So, now that's it's been established that plant is now technically a Phal, why shouldn't I move all my other Phals into net pots and hang them in the misters under 50% shade cloth right beside Little One?

Roberta 03-13-2021 10:47 AM

Well, actually in your climate, "traditional" Phals would actually be very happy that way. That's much closer to the way Phals grow in nature (the ancestors of even the most complex hybrid) We put them in pots to give moisture to the roots in decidedly non-tropical environments, and stake the spikes upright because we like the look. We work so hard to get conditions in the pot that are moist but not too wet, fight various rots of roots and crowns... wouldn't happen if they were growing on a tree in a suitable environment. Of course even within a genus, different species (and their hybrids) have SOME different requirements... So Little One needs quite a bit more light than the "traditional" Phals. That part would still need to be addressed.

Mr.Fakename 03-13-2021 10:57 AM

I strongly agree on the light part.
On Roberta's advice I put my Phal hygrochila in a very bright spot, where most other Phal would be toasted.

Looking at the leaves of your plant Keysguy, I think 50% shade already is the upper limit of a light demanding hybrid. (looking great though, nice root porn )

The name may change due to DNA releationship... but Phal hygrochila is still more of a Vanda than a Phal. :) Maybe some day the classification process will actually look at the whole plant. Then we can change tags again...

Mr.Fakename 03-13-2021 11:14 AM

Taxonomists can name it whatever they want, it's still a great species!
Now that you've mentioned it's scented, I'm even more eager for my seedlings to bloom! :hijacked:

Keysguy 03-13-2021 01:02 PM

OK Roberta. Now you've got me thinking here.......
I do struggle with Phals that I have in pots and I suspect it's because they are too wet all summer. I started an experiment last year by mounting a few on cedar shingles. They're doing "OK" and blooming a bit with 2x/week waterings during the drier winter months but now I'm wondering if my next step should be net pots under daily misters.
I'm planning a major overhaul of my shadehouse for the fall including new shadecloth and overhead pipes to add hanging space. Also, I want to shift my vanda area (where Little One lives) and its misting system across to south side for more consistent light getting to every row.

When I do all that, is there any reason I shouldn't try a misting area for hanging net potted Phals under say 60 or 70% shadecloth?

Am I crazy?

I've probably hijacked DC's thread enough with all this....

Not crazy. I wonder if that misting system is really necessary in your humidity? They don't want to stay constantly wet.

Keysguy 03-13-2021 01:35 PM

We get almost constant trade winds off the ocean down here. My vanda misters run at first light and then 8 hours after (mid to late afternoon depending on when first light happens) and they are typically dry as a bone within an hour because of the wind.

DirtyCoconuts 03-14-2021 08:46 AM

KG
I find that phals in our environment hate medium. I grow them a few ways but he happiest is mounted on wood in the shade.

Now, many are hybrids so they will do whatever but I have 10~ species as well and they also like it. I water them in the morning if it is not a rainy day.

Mr.Fakename 03-14-2021 09:14 AM

How's your gigantea doin'?

DirtyCoconuts 03-14-2021 07:03 PM

Slow and steady. She pauses in winter so I just noticed the first new green tips on the roots.

I am going to take your advice and convert the mount into a wet mount. I’m going to wrap it in Rockwell cubes and maybe she will respond to the extra available moisture. Up to now she has received normal phal treatment so a little special care is well deserved

Mr.Fakename 03-14-2021 07:15 PM

Oh my. Please don't kill it, or I'll be ever more sad than you, and feel responsible for jinxing your plant :blushing:

Maybe Camille can chime in, she has much more experience with gigantea.

I especially love that Epi. nocturnum. And the bird 'way up in the top of that bottlebrush tree... do you know what it might be? I can't zoom in enough to tell...

DirtyCoconuts 03-25-2021 02:25 PM

the Epi nocturnum is such a treat bc it always self pollinates and usually before they open!!

i would be money on a mockingbird but i did not ID it then

WaterWitchin 03-25-2021 08:37 PM

also, since i was interested ( translation, extremely sleep deprived and spaced out looking at the plant) the older stalks of the bamboo seem to average 45-55 flowers before they retire and start keikis and then lean over to spread the colony.....darn good return on growing investment for ME lol

Roberta 04-07-2021 10:21 AM

Glorious show! OK, I'm sort of weird, but it's that little leafless orchid, blooming nicely, that especially grabbed my attention... what is it?

Keysguy 04-07-2021 11:07 AM

Yeah DC, what is that, a Chiloschista?

---------- Post added at 11:07 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:00 AM ----------

and 4th pic....is that an Aspasia? Shape looks a lot like my principissa (God I love that name!) which just started blooming but is a different color (yellow & white).

Any trick to getting the Eria to bloom? I have one Jay gave me a couple years ago (he couldn't figure out what species it is so what chance do I have?) that grows like a banshee but hasn't bloomed for me yet.

DirtyCoconuts 04-07-2021 01:23 PM

I have the Eria with my Dendrobiums. It was too hot in the cattleya table and other than that I just water and stay out of the way. Fully inorganic mix

The leafless in bloom is chiloschista so. NoID ‘northern Myanmar”

I laughed at the seller when I asked why name a NoID and he said it was the tag he got so it remains....and so it does lol

I took another pic in focus. It’s a super cutie

---------- Post added at 01:23 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:16 PM ----------

Keysguy 04-07-2021 02:59 PM
