So how and where do I grow it???
Bright or dark? |
I grow it quite bright - filtered sun. Both parents are really, IMHO, much closer to Vanda than Phalaenopsis no matter what the DNA says it should be named. It looks like a Vanda, grows like a Vanda...qwack qwack...
|
Thanks!! I’ll be un-potting her, mounting her on a small clay jug and relocating to the front of the lath house.

C. lunifera (color seems way off) C. parishii C. usneoides I tried searching for pictures of the latter two species but they are all so different/variable... I guess those are some options we've got assuming the location is correct. :D |
Quote:
Mine is in a small plastic mesh hanging pot (zero media) and hangs in the misters with the vandaceous plants under 60% shadecloth. |
Neophyte- thanks, that is great info- i have had and killed several usneoides and that is what i think it is...smaller than the others and slightly greener
KG and Roberta- given the growth structure looking more like a phal than a vanda, should i invert it like my other Phals to avoid crown rot or leave it vertical like the vandas? ---------- Post added at 08:43 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:42 AM ---------- here is the little gal in better focus https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...22df5f98_c.jpgUntitled by J Solo, on Flickr |
As you can tell in my pic, mine is straight up. Where you are more inland you probably don't get the nearly constant wind that I do though and that's a big "quick drying" influence in my mind. Maybe try it upside down or sideways?
|
Mine ("Phal" Little One) is straight up in a basket. I happen to have both parents growing for me too... Hygrochilus parishii (Phal hygrochila) is a rather large plant, totally looks like a Vanda and grows accordingly in a basket, and Sedirea (Phal) japonica is mounted (vertically, new growth upward mostly) ... that's the parent that brings the size down. (Sedirea is Aerides backwards... closely related) So name notwithstanding, what works for Vandas should work for Little One, just a little shadier than the big Vandas maybe.

Big thanks, friends!

Ugh on that worm. Blech. Gotta sic a lizzard on that guy! |

That worm is actually a caterpillar of the pipevine swallowtail variety
Eating, appropriately, my Dutchman’s pipevine. They are a welcome bug. Now those tomato moth caterpillars......dead dead dead:biggrin: |

The Masdevallia and Restrepia look like they are doing great. You're clearly giving them what they need. Love the lizards... not the spike-eating types I hope. What is #15 with the fringed lip?
|
Dendrobium polytrichum, maybe?
|
Bingo
---------- Post added at 10:21 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:00 PM ---------- It’s a terrible pic but yes And Roberta. Not sure if you can tell but those silly anoles are on opposite sides of my screen. And they are fighting. They have no idea why the other is so good!!!?!? Lol |
Now I can see that they are separated by the screen.. subtle but when you point it out I can see it. Clearly they 'aren't too bright. As long as they don't eat orchid spikes... is the the bad habit only of the curly-tails?
|
correct- they are the dumbest creatures ever- I believe they are the most aggressive on the planet- they will try to fight a person..they show their frill and flex and i have had them bite my finger when i point it at them - no teeth- and they are NOT orchid eaters.
none of my indigenous reptiles eat any of my plants, orchid, fruit or veggie- makes it so much easier on my soul to remove them with extreme prejudice a squirrel was terrorizing my dog yesterday, yelling at him, tossing leaves at him, and the dog was so made at me for not helping....i was like, its his yard too. buddy. sorry LOL the iguana and curly tail population in MY yard is lower this year...i am hoping, i know i have not actually changed the population, but that the constant pressure of death from me will make them think of finding other places to hang out. a buddy who does some pest work in tenn over the summer said that the best way to make a rat colony leave a barn was to introduce a trap that did not kill them but was really annoying ( a light slap, a high pitched sound, a low charged zap...) made them want to find better locales maybe my missed shots and pressure is working hehe ---------- Post added at 09:04 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:50 AM ---------- oh, i forgot...PLANTS new to me as of december- milton something https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...8bb14d49_c.jpgUntitled by J Solo, on Flickr cape gooseberry "tree" is finally a battle i am winning https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...8d22285d_c.jpgUntitled by J Solo, on Flickr i have not IDed this guy yet but it is a new butterfly on a passiflora vine... https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...e5119747_c.jpgUntitled by J Solo, on Flickr and here is the flower of that vine https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...cda2d543_c.jpgUntitled by J Solo, on Flickr |
I think the Miltonia is Miltonia moreliana (was M. spectabilis v. moreliana but now considered to be a separate species) Blooming now? Mine only blooms October-ish. Love the passiflora.
|
I have it’s tag some place. It was a weird one. I got it from Ecuagenera and it had two leads both rotten from shipping. I dried it out. A lot. And the one lead fell off. The other, this one, the new growth stalled (expected) turned into two newer growths and the partial spike stayed..... two months later and it woke up lol
|
Maybe you'll get another bloom in the fall, by which time it'll be even better established. Nice!
|
I loves me anoles! Goals. Goals...
|
I'm glad the Miltonia survived; it's spectacular!! :D I think some members did a growing project with M. spectabilis/moreliana a few years back...

All gorgeous, that Catt is spectacular!

Seriously need to find time to post my carnivorous venture soon! Nice!! And planted my tomatoes... seriously thinking about putting in a PVC pipe to water... haven't ever done it, but sure want to try.
|
If I recall correctly that Cattleya hybrid has some Schomburgkia in it; it's so pretty! :D

Thanks all!!!
The call is “rio’s little treasure.” Myc so that is schom/Catt correct? Much better bloom this time too http://www.orchidboard.com/community...light=Treasure |

Wowee! What is #2? and #18? That rain looks REALLY soggy, with the heat I am sure the plants totally love it.
|
About time DC! That rain picture perfectly reminds me of living in Puerto Rico... ah, memories...
Loves me the calamari orchid. What's #4? Is #15-16 the bamboo orchid you sent? |
#2 is lepanthenes sherry birdy. Super cute mini from ecuagenera. In my Bubbies depression glass from Coca Cola.
#4 Epiphyllum hookerii. I finally green one well and then messed up the end. All these failed to open and died like 100% formed. Dunno. ES gave me some good info #6 Epidendrum purum. Also #11. Super good smell. Like soap #18 catesetum black jade I love the summer rains. Once I dialed in the location of the plants and the medium, it’s just like watching god water the plants. Perfect ---------- Post added at 06:43 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:35 PM ---------- WW- Yes. 15 is the one I sent you. It is tall but very slim. You can keep it in a corner and it’ll get 4-6 feet but just keep the canes bound together and it’ll behave. I would say to take her out in the summer. She lives in FULL florida sun. |
#18 really caught my eye... Looks more like Clowesia than Catasetum. But then looked it up, actually Clowesetum Black Jade ... half Clowesia russeliana (other half is Ctsm. expansum) Yours takes after the the Clowesia parent more than the Catasetum... no color in the center (Ctsm. expansum usually has a red or yellow callus in the center) and it is a "perfect flower" - that is, no separate male and female. And super-floriferous, lots more flowers than the Catasetum parent. I can see the Catasetum in the overall shape though, more open than the Clowesia. I am quite fond of primary hybrids, where the characteristics of the parents are much more noticeable than in more complex hybrids.

Reading that post, roberta, is like a romance novel to a plant nerd like me
I appreciate your knowledge so much. Thanks for catching I had the species name wrong |
Ohh DC you have like a botanical garden!!! I am a bit in a hurry during the week, but I'll take my time over the weekend to check all your blooms; like a nice book!
|
My favorite are all the sleepy owls!
|
Thank you so much Sade and Jeff, I agree
I made that mount and built the owl house so I get to feel proud like it had anything to do with me lol |
Always a treat to see your stuff!
|
That's an OWL?!? I couldn't tell what it was. I go in for my first appointment toward cataract surgery today.
My owls here are those great big honkin barn owls. They can wake the dead when they start their chatter in the middle of the night. |
