Hey DC... harvest me some passion flower seeds to plant next spring. I like that particular color better than the one I have at the moment. :bowing

If you like to see other passionfruit blooms, checkout YouTube. I watched a video of passionfruit blooms about a year ago, all are spectacular but others are just out of the world!

this last one is just too fun...i moved a pot that was there a little while and the weeds were growing on a ghost pot LOL

WaterWitchin 10-22-2020 09:26 AM

Second pic that looks like something flying... what is that? Yellow bloom above ghost pot pic.. same question.

Ghost pot... made me start thinking about weeds in your climate. Are weeds as much of a problem as marauding lizards?

Roberta 10-22-2020 11:19 AM

Looks like you will get at least one of the Catasetum group! I hope it is where lizards can't get in, in case there were any survivors of your "campaign"

DirtyCoconuts 10-22-2020 04:36 PM

The second one is Den. Lewin park. The yellow and pink one is a ground orchid that I may have hybridized (or my yard did) as it appeared in between a bunch of yellow and purple ones

---------- Post added at 04:36 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:33 PM ----------

Weeds appear in every pot eventually and I just pull or cut them as needed. They are less of an issue on mounts. That’s why I like them lol

Roberta- they are still vulnerable but I am vigilant

WaterWitchin 10-22-2020 04:42 PM

Hey! Speaking of vigilance... have you run the trap line yet?

DirtyCoconuts 10-22-2020 04:52 PM

Spathoglottis plicata

Lol. I have only one trap made so far but it’s right next to this plant

WaterWitchin 10-27-2020 03:03 PM

Yup, as I said... give it six months. Have I mentioned lately how much I love anoles? And is that a real Catesetum blooming, or are you faking it? And have you caught any lizards yet?

Yes, my mind does work just like the above... focus, WaterWitchin, FOCUS.

DirtyCoconuts 10-27-2020 03:49 PM

it is a REAL catesetum with really female flowers

i caught one in the bottle trap so far... a tiny but still the curly tail type...I like the fact that it allows me to see it without killing it. same discretion i have with the bb gun

i cannot wait to have too many onions be a problem lol I have the failed watermelon spot which is 2x8...is that better?

WaterWitchin 10-27-2020 04:13 PM

It is better, yes. Plant them all in the middle.

SouthPark 10-27-2020 04:18 PM

Excellent show DC. Excellent. The spider with the green round patch on the back is amazing. Enjoyed seeing all those pics together.

Roberta 10-27-2020 07:40 PM

I got more than usual number of female flowers on Catasetums this year too... I agree, maybe things were TOO good... the female flowers are intriguing, but if you've seen one... Except for some variation in the amount of color in the petals, they pretty much all look alike.

MJG 11-16-2020 06:11 PM

Nice, DC. You seem to always have multiple beauties in bloom. I love the fauna too.

DirtyCoconuts 11-16-2020 08:42 PM

Thank you thank you thank you
I have a lot of plants so...lol

The egret pic is during the tropical storm, Eta. I went out to check on stuff and saw her standing there and had two thoughts; i want to take this pic; if this bird is just standing out here, it ain’t that bad.

WaterWitchin 11-17-2020 08:16 AM

The egret was just there due to the storm, right? Tell me they don't prance regularly around in your yard.

The lizard.... so sleek, so chill. Wanna pet it.

Nice blooms as well. I love the calamari... really need to seek one of those out some day.

egrets and ibis are in my yard almost every morning unless there is something else there that spooked them (raccoon, neighbor, loud truck exhaust :(()

i am about 3.5 miles to the Everglades, as the ibis flies, and 13 to the ocean so i get great birds moving through.

the absolute best is at night(before dusk) when approximately 1,295,239 seagulls fly overhead to roost in the everglades

i have a young P chochleata (sp?) that i will transition into SH for your eventual next box

neophyte 11-17-2020 06:00 PM

Such lovely flowers (and wildlife)! I don't want to spoil the party, but are those markings on that pink noid Cattleya normal/due to the lighting, or could they be a sign of a virus?

DirtyCoconuts 11-17-2020 08:26 PM

It’s Lways been like that for me.... I also shoot pics at night and while watering so it is always possible it is a bad pic too lol

Roberta 12-10-2020 10:11 AM

What is the monster #3?? That Arundina graminifolia clearly loves the climate. I have one that is struggling... too cold, I think.

WaterWitchin 12-10-2020 10:30 AM

It's a Dutchman's Pipe, Roberta. Isn't it splendid? I'd never seen one like it before DC posted it on a different thread.... http://www.orchidboard.com/community...tml#post944592

---------- Post added at 09:30 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:28 AM ----------

PS You live tropical enough... maybe it would survive your winters? Find a good spot for carrion/sweet lemonade smell and get it going! It supposedly grows fairly quickly. I'm gonna try it as either an annual, or cut back and bring inside for winter in a pot. Minus any blooming inside of course.

Roberta 12-10-2020 11:06 AM

I have two things working against me when I try to grow those decidedly tropical plants... cold (not by Midwest standards, but 39 deg F is not very tropical) and low humidity (the last month or so has gotten close to single digits in the middle of the day on occasion) I water the the heck out of the orchids but everything else has to either thrive or not...

DirtyCoconuts 12-10-2020 12:31 PM

That is a fair cut off. Some are worth work but not every plant can require work

It is a fun plant. There are always some creatures buzzing around it.

Absolutely. If all plants required much work, I'd be dead and buried. Gotta pick your poison. I'm seriously thinking about planting it by our manure pile, where we keep predator wasps. Draw those flies in...

DirtyCoconuts 12-10-2020 03:32 PM

yes!!!! that is also where you NEED the sarracenia! they are wasp DESTROYERS. in fact- prior to the chemical disaster of '20 i had the most explosive growth when my neighbor smashed a paper wasp nest....the pipes were FULL it was a lovely bloodbath!! flies were coming in to see what was happening and getting banged by the drosera and the flytraps. perfect harmony of death :)

Roberta 12-30-2020 08:59 PM

Is the 3rd one down Arachnis flos-aeris? VERY cool (or warm actually... ) And that Catasetum waking up... I'm still trying to get most of mine to go to sleep. Like dealing with a little kid. ("But I'm not tired...")

DirtyCoconuts 12-30-2020 09:20 PM

I have the label as arachnis Maggie oei. It is a handwritten one. No nursery so I suspect a homestead trip (Redlands)

And the catasetum are hilarious. I also still have some with leaves from last year. I guess I’ll just keep em out and wet and see lol

---------- Post added at 09:20 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:15 PM ----------

As usual, Roberta, you never cease to amaze

Maggie oei is a hybrid of A hookerina and A flos-aeris

Great eye

flos-aeris has a lot more green. Lovely. I want it

Roberta 12-30-2020 09:28 PM

That Arachnis is really distinctive. And of course, something I can't grow (too warmth-loving to grow outside and too big for the GH) Grass always greener on the other side of the fence...

Keysguy 12-30-2020 09:42 PM

I have an Aranda Bertha Braga looks just like it. Maggie Oei is one of the parents with Vanda tricolor. Those Arachnis genes must be strong!
