DC - So as mentioned (I think it was this thread) before I was kind of liking a carnivorous plant that my wife had gotten. So I finally took the plunge and made a mini potted bog garden. Mostly butterworts and droseras but also got a venus flytrap and an american pitcher plant.
Also, some updated photos of blooming chids. |
YEEESSSS!!! i love this post!!!
carnivores are amazing and you will want more and bigger bogs very soon, that is quite lovely- what is the base pot with that awesome little water level indicator thing? Also, in the group shot, what are the little sail/clover purple plants? i have a pot of them i got years ago and i love them but i have zero idea what they are the drosera flowers are the most fun and that calamari orchid is STILL making me hungry! |
I love carnivorous plants! Have never been able to successfully grow them. Very sad. Yes, what is that pot in the middle? And is the "calamari orchid" the squid with the purple head? Its real name again please?
|
It is a self watering pot that I had gotten off amazon several years ago but never got around to using it. Link below for either the same one (different color) or something very similar.
https://www.amazon.com/Self-Watering...902675&sr=8-20 The common name for that purple clover plant is the purple shamrock plant but the scientific name Oxalis triangularis. One of my wife's that I take care of. Funny story, and this is how I learned what it is, a little over a year ago it looked dead. My wife got mad at me and was asking why it was dying. I said I had no idea since I don't even know what type of plant it is. She told me purple shamrock plant so I started my research and found out if it gets over watered it will send the plant into dormancy. Sure enough, I was way over watering it. Cut back on the water and boom, back to life. |

I really need to get a Bulbophyllum medusae. I tried to grow a Habenaria medusa but screwed it up royally.

Catts looking good! Loving the medusae (and fine Roberta, you don't have to twist my arm, I will try the Hab. medusa again...if it dies though, that blood is on your hands). Jewel orchid without the leaves in the picture, what kind of madness is that? Reminds me though, mine started opening a few days ago. Looks like somebody spilled wine on your phal as well.

Just to make you drool... everybody needs one of these. (Teensy green shoots just starting to appear. It'll be a good year.) Actually, I'd say the same for Bulb. medusae, but then I love wild-looking/fuzzy and fluffy orchids. |
OrchidBro- It is a normal Ludisa discolor but the inflorescence is quite long and the flowers are all slightly tilted...it is a little mutant
wow Roberta!! that is a show stopper! and me too! Frilly and looking like a sea creature??? sign me up! |
I think Hab. medusa is easier than the Catasetinae, similar dormancy/growth pattern and temperature, much lower light. (Don't need, or probably want, to stay completely dry during dormancy but on the dry side, once new growth appears no need to hold back on the water) I grow them in a terrestrial mix with a little potting soil and a lot of perlite and/or pumice, a bit of sand if I have some handy.

Roberta - Yes, that is a stunning, and drool worthy, Hab. medusa.
DC - Yes, I could tell that was a Ludisia discolor, I was just expecting some photos of the beautiful leaves as well. Now that I look at yours and mine, yours does look a little funky. |
I don’t have the right attitude/culture for growing anything Medusa. I enjoy from afar. The Purple Rain... now that’s been on my wish list for quite awhile!

I have this Chliochista (sp??) starting to spikehttps://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...146aba1_4k.jpgGhost by J Solo, on Flickr these next few are a testament to 1) the resilience of plants and 2) the power of kelpmax this wall of my lath house is five or six rescue vandas i found on the floor of a dilapidated shade house and basically just used their old roots to tie them on https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...228866a_4k.jpgGhost by J Solo, on Flickr I have been decent about watering them but it has been dry here so they have been a bit slow (or perhaps in really bad shape) but now.... https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...d110177_4k.jpgGhost by J Solo, on Flickr a spike!!! https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...0001dd6_4k.jpgGhost by J Solo, on Flickr and this is too cool, look down the one green root and it is growing a new root every 2 inches all the way down!!! https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...73145ec_4k.jpgGhost by J Solo, on Flickr oh, and the pierardiis are opening https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...af29a5f_4k.jpgGhost by J Solo, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...446ed35_4k.jpgGhost by J Solo, on Flickr |
The chiloschista is new to me, so thanks for posting (yes, it looks like you spelled it wrong, google didn't like your spelling). Leafless orchid, count me in. Do the roots take full Florida sun or can they get burnt with direct sun? Vanda roots look good! Mine did the same once I started using Kelpmax.
|

I am thinking about making a small frame to make a sunshade for the area OUTSIDE of my patio to get a growing area with only about 35% shading. I know these need light and i think that dappled full sun, like under a mango tree, or really bright shade would be the sweet spot but i confess i am still dialing it in |
Thanks. Did some quick research and found "the plant must be protected from direct sunlight" so that seems like a pretty firm negative for direct sunlight. Next question(s). Did you get it recently from any shows this year and do you remember the vendor you got it from?

I am afraid i might only get to, it was the booth next to Andy's Orchids, I remember that much and i don't think they were at Ft Lauderdale so that means it was Miami. I'll report back after i can dig around at home |

And I still just want lizards!
|
Hmmmm so I did a bit of research and it you want to google the eating requirements of brown anoles green anoles and curly tail lizards, I can send you whatever I can catch once it is warmer. They will die for sure in cold weather shipping.

Now... if ya had Italian wall lizards, we'd talk! |
LOL!!!
Let me call my herpetologist buddies and I’ll see if I can accommodate you haha |
There are Italian wall lizards here in Topeka, but not in the area I'm in. They originated from a lab many years ago that burned down. I've tried catching them numerous times, but they're quick little buggers.
But they thrive here! Outside! I want to pet them and hug them and call them pretty names! |
