TWO owls! screech owls, they thankfully do NOT screech and make a sweet humming coo

the grey one in the hollow log stump (i believe) is the male and the redhead in the house is the momma, hopefully making little owlets!!!!

DC - I love EVERYTHING about your post -- the flowers, the owls, the rain -- doesn't get any better.

Lovely, as always. Guava!! OMG, I used to love eating those fresh when I lived in PR. What a treat!

What is the big plant at the beginning? I got a piece of something similar from a greenhouse that had one that wasn't in bloom. When I asked if they had any for sale the owner just broke me off a piece and told me it should root just fine. Mine has rooted but after a bit of initial growth has just stayed the same for more than a year now.

Thanks. I'm guessing those flowers are in the 1 to 1 1/2 inch size? They are beautiful.

DirtyCoconuts 08-27-2021 09:09 AM

maybe a bit bigger. like a 2.25" circle could be drawn around the tips

they have a long life time too. i am very happy with this plant, kudos to the folks at bredrens

What is really special about this species is that each flower can be very different - different amounts of red, on different segments, on different flowers. The next time, different yet. And because they bloom repeatedly on the same spike, the show goes on and on.

SADE2020 08-27-2021 02:46 PM

DC what do you do in winter pic month, do you cover some of the plants at all? Meaning under roof, protected from the wind and rain.

DirtyCoconuts 08-27-2021 04:14 PM

which pic are you asking ? i have a poly carbonate roof (clear hurricane panels) i put up if it is raining a lot in the "winter" and then i have painters sheeting i will cover the lath house with if it gets really cold....more often i just let them be and bring in the few really intolerant ones

you are too kind, friend. Yes, it is, although i thought it was moved to Brassiliorchis? i dont know or care lol just tat's what ecuagenera called it when i bought it haha

Roberta 09-08-2021 02:24 PM

The lumpers and splitters are still fighting... For awhile, Maxillaria got split into a bunch of genera. Ecuagenera tried to keep up... Now it's back to Maxillaria. Might be section Brasiliorchis but the genus got put back together at least mostly.

Shadeflower 09-08-2021 04:54 PM

woot you have a corningiana in bloom?
And a Tying shin Fly eagle?

Looks amazing at yours.

DirtyCoconuts 09-08-2021 07:01 PM

And tying shin fly eagle

Thanks.

A friend who is a professor of botany told me it's acceptable to call a plant by any name that was legitimately published. He said only specialists should be expected to keep up with name changes.

Following this thinking I entered a specimen of Convolvulus tiliaceus in our cactus and succulent society show in the caudiciform section. I potted it with most of the tuber exposed; it was just making new sprouts, so the leaves were not large enough to be visible. I won a blue ribbon in that section.

i am neither smart enough, well educated enough, nor motivated enough to know what you are talking about BUT....by context clues, you clearly sidestepped a technical definition for a more nuanced one that you could defend and were rewarded for your scheme with a prize...i already admired you....now this is getting awkward

Deep into the weeds... I think that for most AOS judging centers, if someone enters a plant for judging and doesn't get the genus du jour "correct", they'll just "correct" it if they award it. If you're not submitting a plant for judging, totally no big deal. I'm sure not changing my tags... I do sort of get a kick out of trying to keep it all sorted out, but then I'm weird.

Convolvulus tiliaceus is a very old name for what is now known as Ipomoea batatas. In other words, a sweet potato. I entered a sprouting sweet potato in a competition section devoted to succulent plants with large tuberous roots or stems.

I was within the show rules because I had personally owned it for more than 6 months. If I'd used the current Latin binomial name the judges would have recognized it, laughed and ignored it at ribbon time. There are numerous tuberous-rooted succulent morning glories entered in these shows so they didn't think twice when they saw genus Convolvulus. They did have a good laugh afterward.

By the way I'm an accredited cactus and succulent judge so that made it even funnier.

DirtyCoconuts 09-09-2021 08:15 AM

It is from ecuagenera. The tag is just cornu cervi.

I have no more confidence in the ID than the tag lol

Roberta 09-09-2021 10:29 AM

I think that it is Phal. cornu-cervi. The species is highly variable. I have one that is var. chattaladae that is intensely red, and another that is generic that is almost as red. And another that is much more yellow with just red bars. (Yes, I do love the species, it grows well, also a couple of plants I got when there was a "deal" that I couldn't resist) Here's a bit of a photo gallery... Phal cornu-cervi. The alba and rubescens forms I no longer have (they didn't survive the rookie mistakes from some years back) but the others are going strong - blooming on and off all year. Fortunately, fairly small plants so they don't take up too much room.
