then you need to get a small fish tank and some fat tail geckos! they are just awesome. super cute and very nice and social when they are raised well.
I also like leopard geckos as pets too, they just had more desert needs and thus were harder to keep in the humidity here |

i love them, they are such cool plants, they are neat when totally leafless, pretty with foliage and amazing in bloom also, every single part is toxic and you can make a poison arrow just by dipping it in the sap....the more you know!!! |

I'm amazed by the huge variety of orchids and other plants! Do you have any idea how many plants you have?
Keep those photos coming, they are nice to see and and a very welcome change from all the covid19 stuff flooding the internet. |
the secret to acquiring a large and varied collection is...very low standards LOL i get so many plants in poor shape from the trash piles on bulk day and the clearance section of the big garden stores.
I have no idea how many i have because then i would be in trouble with the wife  for the record i have "room for a few more" at all times lol If i had to guess, i'd say 150-200 orchids, 20-30 fruit type plants, and probably 40-60 various flowering plants in the landscaping that are either intentionally planted or potted. Not counting any pure landscaping shrubs or the break of ficus trees...maybe a dozen cactuses and succulents...so 210-310 range....or "room for a few more" |

FWIW: Tomato hornworms turn into beautiful and beneficial
Spinx moths. Pollinators too. Tomato hornworms | UMN Extension Just askin' are you sure your dwarf radicans isn't an ellipticum? The spacing, clasping, and shape of the leaves lend themselves to that thought. |
I Know! it is one of the biggest challenges i face regarding my role in the food chain...i don't kill anything that i don't eat and i would really prefer to have killed anything i eat ( not possible but in a dream world)..i don't like to kill anything carelessly or needlessly and i always try to relocate rather than dispatch...within reason.
I want to grow my tomatoes so i need these guys off the plants until they are fruited out...i don't poison them or crush them as that would be just wasteful so i try to feed the lizards with them...last year i left all the tomatoes to grow after they fruited out and they were eaten to stumps in a few days!!! i felt that balances my karma with them... as for the ellipticum question, i am NOT sure. i was telling Kim in the other thread that in the Redlands lots of nurseries do their own growing of these guys and have no real labels other than dwarf yellow blooms 4times lol i made the "classification" myself but it was more a general way to ID them....thanks for the direction to look in |
We kill things we don't eat. Then we feed the Turkey Vultures. Our neighbors wonder why they roost here. We also have a nest of Sharp Shinned Hawks. That helps keep the vermin down. Lest you think me cruel, we learned in Master Gardening class that man is what has thrown nusance animal populations out of balance.
|
i think we are on the same wavelength..
one of my old dive buddies was a mojro dog guy, he kenneled about 17 and used them in everyway you could imagine from rescue to treeing, driving, herding etc....he also got into sight hounds....whoa! the state he lived in (i forgot, possibly OK) had him and his pups help with the coyote population. no doubt we messed things up. we killed apex predators and over burdened the heard animals and reduced the areas of all the remaining ones to toenail clippings of their former ranges... -edited to reduce "soapbox" impression_ i just was trying to say i was not in favor of killing things for no reason |
You're soapbox is pointed in a different direction than mine. Especially in the critter habitat area.
|
i edited my post as i was not trying to be preachy and i see i went too far.
we like to cultivate the land, we're going to get our hands dirty....in more than one way apparently. |
It's a fine line. Im not offended. Man has created, by his urban existence, a paradise for nusance (sp) wildlife. That was my point.
