Vanda in a Pot

Hello,

I have a Vanda, a new purchase of almost a month now. The plant seems to be in a basket, and the basket nestled in a large clay pot with sphagnum.
Given that the humidity in the house is a lil low just now, as I run on hot water radiators.... I am thinkin leaving the plant in the pot is a good thing...
BUT.. I am open to hear any suggestions.... thus far it's started putting up new leaves.

I think that it is probably a good idea to keep the plant in the pot with the moss, given your growing situation. This will aid in keeping a little more humidity and moisture where vandas need it most. Vanda roots do need to dry between waterings, so watch those roots carefully so that if they start to turn on you, you can correct the problem quickly by removing the moss. From what you've said, I don't think this will be an issue for you, but I thought I'd throw that in here too.

Trying to grow a vanda in Canada? That's like me trying to grow masdevallias and draculas here in Florida after moving here from the Pacific NW 12 years ago. Spent a lot of money on humidfiers, plant cases, etc, all pretty much to no avail. Best to grow what your conditions are suitable for. But good luck with the vanda, all the same!

So far so good... no rot...
As to trying to grow a Vana in Canada, well.. not all Canada is equal, and I bought it from a grower in Canada.
Granted she has a greenhouse....

I too live in Ontario and have 5 vandas. All were purchased in june and were shipped bare root in small baskets. I left them in existing small wooden baskets and potted them in spagnum in larger mesh baskets and hung them outside for the summer. Upon moving them inside recently, I did a close inspection and found that some of the roots were beginning to rot as the moss was holding too much moisture. (too much rain recently). I have removed from the larger pot and tucked a small amount of spagnum in the smaller pots now leaving majority of roots exposed. I mist them 1 to 2 times a day. Main concern on the double potting I would say would be the root rot. Good luck with your vanda.

I've had great success in growing vandas in vases.
It's worth a try if you are a window sill grower like myself.

THere is a thread on vandas in glass vases that is really neat. you should check it out. I think that would be a great way to grow vanda's in Canada!
