Bolero's Masdevallia Machu Pichu JV
Bolero, I just stumbled across your photo of Masdevallia Machu Pichu JV, very nice indeed .
I saw one at the Melbourne Orchid Spectacular last year, did you buy it from a nursery or aquire it through private contacts?
Thanks

Yep! I've come to the realisation that as Masdevallia are perfect for my climate [except the hottest days in Summer but you can use evaporative coolers and take other measures to cool the temperatures and keep them alive]
I would like to focus on growing them with other orchids on the side.
I'm glad I realised this now while I am in the planning stages of my GH
M. Machu Pichu JV is of course on my hitlist

Actually the photo doesn't do it justice. It's a division of an awarded plant and I have to say the purple is very deep and looks like velvet.....it is simply superb. So you should aim to get one.
If you try Mount Beenak Orchids in Eastern Melbourne or Bill Miles at Species Plus they both have divisions of this one. Also you will find that Royale Orchids has divisions but they are extremely expensive. Royale also have a version called "Windmill" I believe which is meant to be even better than this one.
I haven't seen it so I can't comment but all of the growers are accessible from where you live and you can order by phone. Hey, are you going to the orchid fair next month Damian?

Thanks Bolero , that's great that there are two local sources.
I actually went to an orchid growing workshop last weekend and Clive and Agnes from Mt Beenak where there and Clive gave a presentation about mostly about Masd. crosses, breeding, primary hybrids etc and about spagnum moss, potting watering etc.. it was really great!
I pre-ordered a few seedlings and two divisions; M. schroederiana and M. tovarensis Waverly and a Dracuvallia but of course I bought 6 more on the day
All but 4 of my Masd. that were struggling in hydroton I potted back into sphag [with bark in the bottom of the pot] now that I've learned about potting them the right way with sphag and watering them right when in sphag.
Do you mean the fair at Greensbourough? I might be going to it.. I think maybe mine or a neighbouring club is organising a bus but I'm not sure if I'll go with them or not or if they still have any spare seats..
Are you going to the auction next weekend in Monbulk?

Not sure, I have seen it written as 'JV' and as 'Jay Vee'.
So someone has given it the name but I have no idea who or why.
No I'm not going to the auction at Monbulk as much as I would love to go. I am flying overseas that weekend for a few days so I can't make it, let me know how it goes that and what you buy there.
Yes I mean the Fair at Greensborough, it's usually pretty good and there are actually more vendors going than they listed, nearly 20 in total so there will be lots for sale and some quality stuff.
Mt Beenak should have some JV's left over and Species Plus will be at the fair as well, you just have to call them and let them know you want the Macchu Pichu. If my plant was bigger I would give you a division but it only has 5 growths at this stage.

Thanks Bolero . If I don't go to the fair, then I could arrange to pick up a division from Mt. Beenak at the Melbourne Orchid Spectacular later on.. do you know if Species Plus will be there too?...
I'd love to go and visit Mt Beenaks nursery someday.. have you been?
I've never been to a live orchid auction before - how do you think it will compare to Ebay? I'm wondering if anyone will be exercising restraint and only bidding up to what the plants are really worth rather than just to win against other people..
I'd really love to win the Bulbophyllum dayanum and B. sumatranum listed but I'm not holding my breath.
We're getting up 4-5am just to get there in time for the second lot on Sunday!
