I was looking around and there isn't much out there as far as phal flasks. At least that I could find.

I have phal flasks ( my own crosses ) and a zygo cross at the lab. Don't think they are ready though....

I put a list of sources, including some in the States back on page 5: http://www.orchidboard.com/community...ct-idea-5.html

Some of those are within normal budget, some are much bigger, more expensive flasks. I guess one option might be for some of the US folks to team up to get a flask between several people. I think I posted before: Meyers say seedlings travel well in a baggie, so one person could get a flask and split it...

Shame the US sites don't seem to do mini flasks with 4-6 seedlings like many of the sites here seem to.

A lot of the learning and experimenting process is in actually deflasking it yourself, so hopefuly people are willing to do that!

I have a phal mother flask growing at the lab so it can get replated, I'm excited about it! I also have an Encyclia vitellina selfing at the lab!

I think if someone were to deflask, bag some of the seedlings and send them off imediately then the people recieving them would still have to treat them as de-flasked and go through the process of aclimatising them.

It's not quite the same, but I think its an option, especially since the larger flasks seem to be more available in the US. Perhaps some people there would prefer to get a full flask for themselves, some might prefer to split one: it gives more options.

Maybe, for example, if there was someone who wanted and was willing to pay for one of the big flasks from Big Leaf, they could get if for themselves, but send out a few spares (for a reasonable contribution of course!) to some others who couldn't afford a full one.

Maybe we could do some of your seedlings in future years Bob! I have some pods right now....

PS: and orchidsarefun! Actually a zygo cross might be interesting if there is a next one of this project! But I'm guessing it won't be in time for this.

I would be very careful shipping newly deflasked seedlings before they harden off! They will be very sensitive coming straight from the flask!

Maybe! If the americans wanted to do Encyclia vitelina I have enough seed to basically have as many flasks as needed.

I was thinking more along the lines of the lab packing small flasks of about 3-5 seedlings and then sending them out......people participating in the project could then pay the lab direct.

Ahh, I see. Although it would be a waste of space and agar to only put 5 seedlings in a flask.

orchidsarefun 03-30-2013 09:58 PM

not really. I am saying that the lab deflasks and sends out 3-5 in a small container or a "baggy"......probably a baggy is best.
