Lycaste Takagamine

I'm posting this not so much for the pictures, 'cause the pics "ain't" so great. The reason is that this is the 3rd season I've bloomed this Lycaste and the 3rd year I've gotten the discoloration on the flowers. I have done due diligence to keep water or anythig from landing on the flower and still brown gunk! I can't believe this is something cultural for this flower!

Thank you for sharing. Your plant has an excellent flower and color. I feel your pain! You have already asked yourself if there is "something" in this individual plant.

Is there a problem with one of the component species of the hybrid mix? Perhaps, your conditions present a problem for some portion of Lyc. Takagamine's background? I'm beginning to think that Lyc macrophylla is a species that I should avoid. In addition, Takagamine has skinneri, cruenta and lasioglossa.

I'm a Lycaste enthusiast. Will you please share the source of your hybrid?

I will be looking to this thread to hopefully learn more.

I originally saved this plant from the dumpster. The local garden center had it on the shelf with no leaves and to look at it, one would think, "Why don't they toss that dead plant!" I took a chance on this $99.00 (price marked on plant) plant that I got for $1.00. To my suprise and joy it took root and grew more pseudobulbs and flowered for me (link above). The plant originally came from a grower in Canada, Zephyrus Orchids I don't know if they have any more.

I think it looks beautiful Doc, even with those brown spots. The color is wonderful. You really did a good job bringing it back to life.

Lycaste flowers bruise v-e-r-y easily, could this be the cause? It's a gorgeous bloom and if it is mechanical damage, it will be easy to correct.

It doesn't look like resulting from cultural treatment, Howard. Even more if they appeared in the same areas all three times, precisely at the sepals tips.

I wish I could suggest something, but I can't. It is a really beautiful color though. I hope someone can help diagnose this guy. DO you know the parents?

Lycaste Takagamine (Chita Melody 'Starfire' 4N x Sunrise 'Ena')
Oh my quite a bit of breeding on this one...It is way more than 1/2 skinneri...with some lasioglossum, macrophylla and cruenta thrown in.
Sunrise = Imshootiana x skinneri
Imshootiana = cruenta x skinneri

Chita Melody = Shoalhaven x Himmana Wine
Shoalhaven = skinneri x Koolena
Koolena = skinneri x Auburn
Auburn = Sunrise (see above)x Belliae
Belliae= macrophylla x skinneri

Himmana Wine = Lucianii x Auburn (see above)
Lucianii = lasiglossum x skinneri
