Phal. Lovely Kid = Phal.(lobbii X parishii)

I seldom grow phalaenopsis.
This one, and both its parents seem to be must-grown butterfly orchids for me, even though they do not resemble traditional phalaenopsis.

It sure is "lovely". Bet you could grow specie phals real well there, ever thought of giving them a try?

Hi Al,
I like phalaenopsis, too. But the winter here is too cold and too windy for them to grow well.
Since i do not have a greenhouse for them, i seldom grow them.

If i were in south Taiwan, i would grow them in trees.
The phalaenopsis orchids usually do well there.

yes i,ll bet you a dollar that species orchids will thrive in youre locality.

Your winter temps drop below 60 degree F? You must be up in the mountains. Phals are pretty temp. tolerant, you don't have a place protected from the wind and chill night air? Sorry, I suppose you have tried. I'm just an enabler you know!:biggrin:

In winter, the average temp is about 15-20℃( 59-68℉) but when the cold front from the Mongolia Plateau arrives, the temp will drop below 50℉ and the weather becomes rainy and chilly for a long time, which causes damage to the tropical orchids, especially those from the rain forests such as Phalaenopsis and antelope dedrobiums. Since all my orchids are grown outdoors without protective equipments, I have to choose some easier orchids to grow, such as soft cane dendrobiums, cattleyas and chinese cymbidiums. Lucky, these orchids tolerate well here. The photo here shows my growing area for orchids. I also grow some trees in my yard, which is benefit to provide good humidity.

That is beautiful Pheli, another thing I love about orchids and their 'keepers' is that you can learn so much about the world we live in. I would never have though your country would get weather like you describe.:shock: Thanks for the geography lesson!
