"cow horn" schomburgkia potting question 2

I have these pieces of schom. and was thinking of using better gro orchid moss, and a square cedar basket to pot them in until their roots system became good enough to mount. Would this be okay? or should I just leave them in their net pots with the better gro special mix/some sphagnum moss mix....

Their roots are so tiny right now I truly don't want to try and mount them just yet with out sufficient roots to attach to the mount...

It is September now and new roots will start in April, so you better wait. Schomburgkia/Myrmecophila are not very picky about the potting medium.

okay thanks very much. Some of my orchids are starting to show new root growth. So I was not aware that these did not grow during the fall, especially since we are still having summer weather here.

Interestingly, I got a nice big piece of Shom. humboltii (sp?) that was taken from a very large plant. Its trying to grow more roots now, but this is South Florida. I'm certainly no expert, but Im going to go ahead and mount it now. It looks like an unkillable beast!

Mount it now. The roots will grow regardless of whether you have it in moss or mounted. If you mount it you can water it a lot which will get better roots. Soak it in some seaweed extract every two weeks and watch the roots really take off. I mount on top of sphagnum moss and use phone wire to wrap in onto the mount. But make sure you keep it watered. You're in Tejas and winter is still months away.

um Tejas(?) yeah we got months of warm weather ahead...I almost kind of like it in the cedar box and orchid moss now though. lol. I will mount one piece of it and see how I feel about it.

I have several pieces of old crepe myrtle limbs I had cut off my biggest tree would that work for now until I am able to find something more permanent for it.

I think it was the Spaniards way back when who spelled it tejas. I have had very good luck with wooden mounts where I drilled holes through them. It gives the wood more end grain which soaks up more water. A wet mount is a good mount. Not soaked but just damp. The holes can be drilled where you put the moss. Schoms get pretty big though. Well the flower spikes get long. Love to see it when it blooms for you.

me and u both lol. i think it might have had a spike starting but it seems to have died.....then maybe the new growth that I think is a phulb growth is actually a spike who knows I sure as heck don't. Will post pics soon. I use the weakly weekly method of using the seaweed extract. The phulbs have no decent roots on them is my biggest issue i mean they are so tiny. I am afraid that if I try and mount it now they may not appreciate it. I really don't want to lose this plant it will be so pretty if or when it blooms. My other schom is so happy in its hanging basket I fear even remotely attempting to mount it.
