Any chance of id'g this Zygopetalum? Male
Default Any chance of id'g this Zygopetalum?

I'm assuming it IS a zygopetalum. This was given to me by a friend a little over a year ago. It was nearly dead, having only one leaf on one Pseudobulb, and had not bloomed in years. He wasn't even sure what color it was! I put it outside, repotted it (the media was practically soil), and began to fertilize it, etc. It responded very well and put out much more vigorous new growth and a few new pseudobulbs. Then this fall I noticed it had a flower stem coming out, very exciting! Then right after that another stem came out from the same bulb, amazing! The first one has taken a while to open, and one of the remarkable things about it (at least in my experience), is that every flower opened the same day, not from the bottom up as has been my experience with every other orchid. Any idea what it might be? Has the fantastic fragrance I associate with Zygopetalums. I've put one photo showing most of the plant, and the other a closeup of the flower.

Unfortunately I think I've seen quite a few that look like yours.
Maybe others with more discerning eyes may chime in.

I see these alot at Trader Joe's.
Or I used to. Until I decided I wanted one.
I think it's a zygo.

That's a very nice but typical Zygo. Attributing it to any particular cross would be a complete guess.

That's pretty much what I thought, PaphMadMan. At least I know it's a Zygopetalum now.

maybe a Z Blue Banks ? its almost impossible to tell 100% as there are hundreds of very similar-looking hybrids.
I don't have this one but a couple of others which do not have blooms that open simultaneously - maybe someone who has a zygo with that unique characteristic can chime in.

That's what I was wondering, if that's a typical Zygo trait (all blooms opening simultaneously). I can't think of any other plant, much less orchid that has done that.

not with any of mine....so far
That said I have a Z Alan Greatwood about to bloom that I have never managed to bloom. It was registered in 1985, so it is a golden oldie.
I got mine in December 2011. All the buds appear to be colouring up at the same time ! I will let you know what happens.

Thanks, Orchidsarefun! It would be interesting to ID it tentatively at least, for that one characteristic.
