Clarification on some things is okay, but it seems the RHS is just merely flexing its influence as being the leaders in the naming and taxonomy. Thier ruse is that it is being done under the guise of plant genealogy. The problem exsists with thier methodolgy in doin so.

Read some of these....

And here is a thread from here over three years ago....
Orchid name changes
I was not the least offended.

However as I understand it the RHS was not set up to carry out the wishes of hobby growers of Cattleyas. It wa sset up as learned scientific.body to keep registration records and make other hoticultural decisions.

I was not ecstatic about the change as would hav eto change all ny name tags from BLC to RLC. Bugger it they are staying the same but if referred to publicly or in print I will try to be correct as per RHS.

Happy catting.

Please keep polite on Orchid Board.

I think it's time this subject was dropped.

From your photo you looked more intelligent than that. Growing Cattleyas is an addiction . Like you they are beautiful and like me they live for a long time. In Florida my knowledge tells me you have in Florida some of the best nurseries in the world for catts.

As your collection grows because of your addiction you will begin how wise it would be to keep up with any classification.

Hello Bruce...

This is the second time your posts have caught my attention for the wrong reasons.

Not to throw wood on the fire, but this is not always true. As many have stated, they are simply hobby growers. And herein lies the problem, the commercial growers cater to us.

On another thread, someone was looking for a cross that was pictured, thru the RHS directory, and could not. The cross may not be listed, but is most know it as a Blc, then most commercial growers are going to name it a Blc.

At the Redlands Orchid Festival this past weekend (the biggie down here) I noticed mass confusion on naming plants. I saw the same plant at different vendors lists as a Laelia, a Catt, and a Sophritis. This can't be good for the hobby grower, especially the new ones.

So in the end, while naming orchids, or changing its name, has its merits, it can also be frustrating to the new hobbyists. It also comes off as an elitist action. I for one, hope this hobby keeps encouriging others to enjoy it, as I do.

First, let me congratulate you on the FANTASTIC orchid.

Secondly, regarding the nomenclature. I first begin by saying that I am merely a hobby grower, albeit a serious one. Having made my disclaimer, I will suggest this

1) I learned in Law School that it never pays to be rude to your audience. Your message, while it may be well intended, totally gets lost. Sort of like wrapping a gift in garbage.

2) You may call it laziness, or stupidity, ignorance, or many other things, but many of us are tired of the ping-pong of orchid name changes.

3) You know sometimes I'd rather call my orchid Schomburgkia (it's such a delicious name) and a Laelia or a Catt. That's how I know them and that's how they will stay...for now. OR until you know, I enter it for exhibition. Who knows? My Laelia anceps will never be a Soprhocattleyabrassavola anceps and a Cattleya skinneri will never be a Guarianthewhoknowwhatwe'llcallitnextmonth skinneri.

Like farting in front of the Queen, it's just not done.

Maybe its a language thing? But on my account, it'll take more than that to get my goat.

It's not a matter of anybody being "touchy"...it's a matter of being rude...which we do not do here.

Hi Cattleya17!
This is the whole plant, I put a regular beer can (350 mL) on pot for comparison.
Kind regards!
