A question: Vanda devogtii and Vanda celebica Male
Default A question: Vanda devogtii and Vanda celebica

Is there a breeding program to procreate these species? I know both are super-rare plants that were lost for a period of time. It would be great if the plants were bred not only for hobbyists, but also for the wild. They're great-looking plants, and it would be a shame to lose them. It'd be great if they were re-introduced into the wild.

I found pics of them:

V. devogtii (This one looks very similar to merrillii)

V. celebica (I love the twin hooks on the lip)

Yes, no idea but I really hope so too.
I bought last year in Singapor a young plant of V. devogtii but until it blooms, I have a doubt.... It's a fact, that devogtii seems very close to merillii. I think that the lip is longer, darker and thinner on the mid lobe.... But have to check.
V. celebica, I have never seen to sale anywhere. The only time I saw plants to sell, the pict didn't match to the real ones..

Hey,

Nice picture there. I know there is an independent conservation program going on in South Celebes to save rare orchids. Unfortunately this program is not supported well by proper laboratories and much of propagations is done through divisions.

Celebes is home for many endemic species that even captivated Alfred Wallace by its beauty. Vanda arcuata, Vanda jennae, Vanda devogtii, Vanda celebica, Ascocentrum aureum, Phal venosa, Phal celebensis to name a few in Orchidaceae family. Even phal amboinensis and phal amabilis from Celebes are quite distinct from other areas in Indonesia.

Fortunately, deforestation in Celebes is not as scary as its neighboring islands, Borneo. I think orchids will be doing fine in here for long years to come. Long lost orchids are better left not rediscovered, otherwise illegal trades will come ravaging the forests and it will become lost forever in its natural habitat.
