J&L orchids?

I'm looking for a little feedback with this vendor. I actually found something that I was interested in. But I stopped short of pressing the submit button when I read the terms of sale. At the bottom of the page concerning liability. It's the first one that I'm wondering about ( identification ). Is it me or does this seem odd?

J&L Orchids - Domestic Terms of Sale

J & L sells lots of species and cannot always guarantee that they are actually given the right name due to name changes, the possibility of new or unidentified species, etc. I've never had a problem dealing the ladies at J&L and would recommend them highly. If you have a problem with what they sell, I'm sure they'll replace it.

boytjie 08-15-2010 08:13 AM

J&L rocks. Even better if you have the chance to visit in person sometime. The ladies who run it are knowledgeable, friendly, and engaging, and their stock is top-shelf. I don't think you need to worry about ordering from them.

I love them! They are super nice and their plants,a tiny bit small in one instance, but VERY healthy, have done beautifully for me.They def. have superior quality!Order away!

I have also enjoyed J&L They have alot of minitures and plant quality is very good. The only problem is sometimes I kill them. Becky Jo

Looks like everyone so far has had a positive experience with this vendor. Heck I might give them a try.

I can understand the last part of the quote as far as new or the unidentified. But a name changes for the species. I thought that the species names ( which 99% of them I can't pronounce  ) were more or less set in stone..

I go to J&L a few times a year, they are less then an hour from me. I love them.

Species names might change for many reasons, and few if any are really 'set in stone'. There is always more to learn. It might be discovered that a species has been named more than once, in which case the earliest name must be used even if it was widely known under a different name. A species might get split into 2 or more species, or 2 or more could be lumped together into just one. A species could be reassigned to another genus if it becomes clear it is more closely related to that group of species, or genera can be lumped or split too. If a species name was already used in its new genus then that could change too. And on and on...

ronaldhanko 08-15-2010 05:46 PM

I'd like to add that sometimes it is difficult to identify a species accurately (I cannot tell the difference between the two varieties of the Yellow Lady's Slipper, for example when I see them in field) or between some of the Sophronitis species. It sometimes takes a botanist and microscope to tell the difference. That's why you'll sometimes see on a list of species the abbreviation aff.- that means its closely related to the species named without necessarily being that particular species. As another example, I have a plant, pictures of which I posted recently, that I bought as a miniature Brassavola nodosa. Those who saw the pictures were of four different opinions as to what it was, nodosa, one of two other species, or a hybrid of nodosa and something else.

I will add kudos for J&L. They are great. They were at our orchid show and spoke at one of our meetings. I've probably bought more orchids from them than any other mail order vendor, and I've never had a problem.

rba 08-16-2010 02:28 AM

To everyone that provided feed back for this vendor. Thanks it'll go along in my decision.

PaphMadMan and Ron.

That some very useful information both of you provided aside from the feed back I appreciate it.

One last question ok maybe two

Does J&L send out any kind of conformation that let's you know if your order has been mailed/shipped? And also do they have a certain shipping day?

Duane McDowell 09-09-2010 08:25 PM

I first bought from them in 1984. They've been a rock solid vendor all along. Sometimes the plants are a little small, but I've always thought they offered excellent value.
The other thing is that Cordelia, Marguerite and Lucinda are all really knowledgeable and glad to share their experiences with growers. Just can't say enough about them.
I have a wonderful plant that I got from them just coming into bloom now - I'll have a pic up in the next few days... Hmmm, probably time to place another order myself...

RJSquirrel 09-10-2010 01:59 AM

J & L are good people , delivered in timely fashion As has been said ..small...BUT lots of their items are miniature, compact and windowsill growers and ARE small anyway...but very healthy all around,..I ordered 9 plants from them about 6 months ago and all but 1 have done well regardless of being left on a hot porch all day long roasting in the sun by the USPS who didnt bother to knock on the door when the package arrived they just dumped it..The one? hmmm I over watered it and it died ...you can get a few extra plants using the specials they list aND SAVE.. how do ya spend money and SAVE? tell me the secret :)

Connie Star 09-12-2010 08:14 PM

The Amherst Orchid Society had it's annual sale today and Cordelia Head from J&L was there with beautiful plants. I've bought from them before and their stuff has always done well. A Masdie Machu Pichu just bloomed for me today.:)

I got my first Order from J & L last week. I had no problem with the orchid. I only had a problem with the way it was shipped. In an old, broken down, used box that looked like it was drug outta the trash can. Not impressed. I would have thought this outfit would have better packaging material onhand than what they shipped my plant in. For what I paid for the orchid, I would have expected more.

J&L comes to our shows yearly and they are eagerly awaited. They are fantastic to deal with. You are dealing with the best.

Call_Me_Bob 02-26-2011 10:51 PM

i got a nice masdie from them in october at a show. great vendor and nice people :) the masdie is in spike now and has 6+ new growths

billc 02-27-2011 04:53 AM

I think J&L is a great vendor for plants. They are very knowledgeable about what they sell and will answer any question you have. Their plants are always well grown.
Just thinking about it, I don't thnk I've ever gotten a plant mail order that came in a new box. They've all come in used boxes. The shape of the box might be due to the shipper. Fragile or Handle with Care on the outside of the box always seems to invite trouble.

I bought a masdie heathii from them at the local show here the beginning of the month. Not a huge division, but VERY healthy. It was in spike, but the bloom blasted. I expected that since it had flown out here from CT, been handled by who knows how many people before me, then got transported in Feb. to MY not-a-greenhouse. The plant is doing wonderful though. I will definitely be ordering from them again.

Paul Mc 02-27-2011 08:14 AM

I have bought lots of plants from J&L in the past, and have not had a problem with them. In fact, they routinely watch the weather where their shipments will be going and will delay sending the shipments if the weather is too extreme or might be a bit dangerous for the plant to arrive alive. So while it might take them a while to deliver your plants, they do so very thoughtfully.

All of the plants I have gotten from them were in great condition, maybe a bit small but very healthy. I don't mind the small though, as I love being rewarded watching them grow into large plants.

What shape was the plant itself in?

Eyebabe 02-27-2011 10:41 AM

I can also jump on the bandwagon of those who have good experiences purchasing from J&L :D

Connie, as NeoNJ indicated he had no problem with the plant...He was not happy about the box though. Now that is funny!

BTW, I like J&L too. Plants sometimes are small but the price usually is very reasonable.

LOL! I just got a message from you or someone else(a mod?) said I insulted you because . Perhaps you should take a look at your statements about Andy's Orchids and J&L. To some degrees, those statement are not true. They are excellent vendors and they don't deserve the negative commends in public.

ronaldhanko 02-28-2011 06:01 PM

I'm with you, Tom. Just ignore this stuff.

Tom-DE 02-28-2011 06:46 PM

Thank you, Ron.
