I feel very faint spicy fragrance after sticking my nose in it, but it might be b'z its not in very hot / bright place currently, I brought it in home, I will try to keep near to window and see if I get strong fragrance.
Advice from another southern Californian... The species grows outside for me very well. Had it about 9 years, 7 years ago I put it in a 6-inch plastic basket, probably with sphagnum, repotted from the original Andy's basket which was likely 4 inch. Medium is pretty much gone, it has such a tangle of roots that it doesn't need any. It's starting to extend beyond the edge of the basket.
Where you live it gets hotter in summer and colder in winter than at my place, but other than some summer shading and maybe bring close to the house in winter or near a block wall or similar "heat sink", it would likely be very happy out in nature. It definitely wants excellent drainage and air around its roots. Then it can't be overwatered..
