Psychopsis Butterfly
Of all the orchids I have, this one is my favorite! Psychopsis Butterfly is a primary hybrid (Pyschopsis sanderae x papilio) that I bought in fall 2010, and 6 months later it grew its first spike. Every year since then it produces a new growth and new spike, while the previous ones just keep blooming and blooming and blooming, the entire plant going no more than 6 weeks without any open flowers. No new spike this year (so far), but it produced a bulb twice as large as the previous years, which is very good news too!
I had trouble getting the 3rd bloom in the photo (one on the right), so had to block it under the other spikes for it to stay in place....
It's not very often though that all 3 are blooming together, so I'm happy I got a photo this time!

Very nice. I have pictures of my alba with 2 open on one spike that did a subspike. I love this one. My non alba is a baby yet but it will get there.

Interesting, I didn't know that these could produce subspikes. I assume that it doesn't happen very often though. I think an alba will be next on my shopping list, I really like this genus. Easy to grow and very rewarding!

Don't have any of these myself but that is beautiful. So they bloom sometimes off the same spike and more than once off a bulb? That's pretty awesome!

They can bloom over and over for years off the same spike. Great plant.

Camille, I had one blooming spike on the plant and this spring before I got them out into the shade house the top of the spike got cooked in the green house. I noticed that the lower nodes were swelling and 2 of them sub spiked for me. Not the best way to get to flowers on one spike.

Once the blooms drops off there's already another one growing to take its place. Depending on the season (temperature), the new bud takes 3 to 6 weeks to develop and bloom. Spikes have been known to continue producing buds for upwards of 10 years. So accidently snapping a spike on one of these is even more heart wrenching than usual, unless you were as lucky as Daethen was, and get those subspikes!
