Default Miltonidium Bartley Schwarz 'Highlander'

Miltonidium Bartley Schwarz 'Highlander' is starting to flower. I have two plants, both rescues from Lowe's in 2008.

The RHS registry has two entries for this name:

Miltonidium Bartley Schwarz (Staal)
(Milt. Hamburg x Onc. cariniferum (1/1/1985))

Miltonidium Bartley Schwarz (Beall)
(Mtdm. Red Pali x Onc. Honolulu (1/1/1986))

It appears from my google search that Beall's cross is what I have, Mtdm. Red Pali x Onc. Honolulu. I could not find any pictures of Staal's cross though. Does anyone know what Milt. Hamburg x Onc. cariniferum looks like ??

The plant pictured has three new leads each with a new flower spike. Flowers have a ns of 1-1/2" and are 2-1/2" high. But the flower count seems a little low, only 4 - 5 buds. Any suggestions to increase flower count ??

Thanks

Charlie

The problem is that the taxonomy changed fairly recently and the oncidium parent (cariniferum) was formerly an odontoglossum. Therefore the first cross was an Odontonia originally.

Get used to the confusion in this group when all of the odontoglossums are changed to oncidium.

Lovely flower. But I grow mine for the sweet floral scent.

It is one of the few warm tolerant Odontocidum hybrids that does well in my house with forced air heating. I should note that I only grew it in water culture and S/H so I can't say how it would fare in drier media.

I have never seen one yet with a large flower count.

This particular clone is Red Pali x Honolulu. My guess is that the Hamburg x cariniferum cross is not exactly an easy grower and isn't widespread. I haven't seen it but the color would be red with a lobed lip, actually similar in some ways to the Red Pali cross.

Miltoniopsis x anything other than odontoglossums or odontiodas tend to be weak growers and not an improvement on either parent.
