Sobralia macrantha
This is the most available species within the genus and easy to grow. Even growing in pure hydroponics can be successful, but I prefer a mix with bark and lava or pumice as suitable for terrestrials. It wants to be watered regularly. It is widespread from Mexico to Costa Rica, can climb up to elevations of 3400 meters and prefers intermediate to cold temperatures. For this I grew it for 2-3 years under the bench where temps stay cooler during summer, but I missed the flowers. In this spring I moved it to my brightest place. You can see Ansellia africana in the background. Now I enjoy regular blooming. Each flower lasts 3-4 days, not only one as normal for other Sobralias. And with 15 or so stems of 80 cm length, constantly new buds are produced. With shading during the hours around noon I am able to keep temps between 25-30°C. Sobralia macrantha occurs several colour varieties.
