Dendrobium nobile Lindl.

Here in Brazil this species was the starting point to produce a multitude of hybrids to the point that most likely there's virtually no orchid enthusiast who hasn't seen one of them, but the species itself remained a little obscure. The flowers are fragrant and despite they don't rival its hybrid progeny in beauty, it is very desirable in my opinion.

Its beautiful Mauro! And I think it is the first time I have seen a pic of the species itself. I love the colouring in the throat!!

I much prefer the species over any of its more colorful hybrids, Mauro, and yours looks stunning. How do you get it to bloom in Brazil? I thought this species required a cool (or even cold) winter rest with absolutely no (or maybe very limited) water. I would have thought, prior to seeing your posting, that it wouldn't get cool enough in Brazil to get this one to flower well. Do you live in a mountainous area or in an area that's closer to sea level?

Yes, I am about 200 km inland, 950 meters above the sea level. Winters here are cold, temperatures often falling as down as 3º or 4ºC during the nights. That's why I can grow several Draculas and some other cold lovers. This plant is normally fully exposed to the cold winds during the winter months and receives virtually no water.
