I think it's just that the yellow on the rib has faded giving the flared kind of effect.

Libo - I just checked the award data from when your clone was awarded it's HCC back in 2006 and your flower is just slightly smaller then the awarded plant which was 9.9 centimeters which is 3.8976378 inches. Great growing!!

Thanks for checking that for me, Glen I always wanted to buy Orchid Wiz but hesitated due to the price. I guess the first thing I will do after I get out of the graduate school of poverty is buying it. I got the information on Kawamoto orchid on Ebay saying that it could get up to 5-6 inch, I don't know whether it is true or not. I did know that with a well-grown plant, if you remove all the bud and just let one flower, it can get super large That's the method Chinese people use to get dinnerplate-sized chrysanthemums. I did noticed that on some of my orchids as well.

Libo - Vendors on ebay are trying to sell plants and they know, for the most part, American orchid growers like big Cattleyas, so they will sometimes lie about expectations. As far as increasing the size of a flower by pinching off the others goes, it will only allow a flower to reach it's genetic best. It will not get bigger than it is genetically programed to be. This is not true in the converse, if a plant doesn't get the proper care and nutrition it needs to reach it potential size you will wind up with a smaller flower.

Wow! Fabulous color! Must be a great feeling getting the first bloom on a plant you have grown from seedling! (I have a few I have been growing a few years, still waiting on blooms ... )
Awesome growing!

I am waiting for many others as well, but this one being the first one really means a lot.
