rescue Encyclia Cindi and Brassavola Little Stars?

I got these online and came basically with no viable roots. all the roots were black and dead.

The Enc did not seem to do anything. Is it going to die or can it put out new roots?
I finally put it in one of those Jiffy seed boxes with some moist coconut soil where I am rooting a Ludisia discolor rooting and an Arundina bulb.

kind of Sphag and bag. is it appropriate for Encyclias?

The Brassavola has no good roots - I put it in SH seems to have a spike. I am afraid to disturb the rizome and check.
leaves on one growth are yellow but other are ok.

Was tempted to send them back but it was a good deal so maybe i'd rather rescue them than go thru all the paperwork/ mailing etc.

Have a bunch of other orchids in the same location that are doing well - growing new roots etc...
Cattleya guttata, small Vanda pachara etc... so I think my conditions should not be t bad.
