Odd looking growth
Umm, what?
If you would have asked me two or three weeks ago I would have put good money on this being new growth. Now I’m not so sure.. I have been growing Catasetinae for three years now and I have never had a growth OR a spike present it’s self like this. So does anyone have any idea what’s going on here?

I see it's a Fred Clarke plant so perhaps email him foto with your concern. If it's unusual,I'm sure he'll be very interested,as am I!

That’s a good idea and I think I might just do that, unless someone else has had this happen? I mean, did it change its mind in the middle of night or something?

So strange! I had no clue they could do this. I am assuming it returned to its normal growing after that happened?

It happened at blooming time this fall...I thought I was getting another (later) spike but it was just a fake-out by the plant. This group loves to keep us on our toes!
The weird growth started into dormancy awhile back...the base swelled a little prior to the start of dormancy...but it'll never amount to anything. The rest of the plant is perfectly normal.
Personally, I've grown quite tired of most of this group so I began eliminating many this past fall and sold off more than I kept. My biggest annoyance is that I constantly get female flowers rather than males. That and the battle w/spider mites every fall. I'll be keeping a few of the clowesia (my favs in the whole group!) and maybe a mormodes or two...the rest will find new homes. I like Lycaste a lot more and that side of my collection has grown by leaps and bounds over the past 2 years so they need the space.

Sorry...didn't see this earlier. Not all lycaste go completely deciduous every year. Some do...others hold their leaves for a couple of years. And, yes, some are total space hogs, both height and width, but there are some that are shorter and a bit more compact.
My smallest ones are brevispatha, campbellii, Dainty, Lemon Twist, and Pixie. These stay shorter than some of the really big Lycaste and are fairly easy to accommodated under lights. They eventually make large clumps so can fill a good sized pot in a few years but you'll never have to worry about renting a crane to move them. I have quite a few seedlings and/or very young and I won't know exactly how large they'll get for a couple/few more years.
I love this group...I find them to be fairly easy growers and the blooms last a long time. And when they get large enough...they are absolutely covered in flowers. I love, love, love this group!
