Talking Bulbophyllum maximum

I first found out about this plant last week on ebay and instantly knew I had to have one. The blooms are so amazing. They can be as long as 2 feet with small flowers on each side of the rachis. I would think that the bloom is a really good size compared to the small plant. I called my sources and luckily one of them had it. I ordered it on Monday and it arrived today along with a freebie. The bulbo. is even bigger and better that I expected and am so happy I bought it. The freebie is an Oncidium oliganthum seedling. I love it because it is so small. I googled a picture of the blooms and was surprised. It is different in coloration that a lot of oncidiums that I have seen. I can't wait for both of the plants to bloom. Here are some pictures of the plants as well as their blooms.

Nice size, I have mine mounted on a layer of spag., but hung like a basket. The blooms are neat, mine were (3) spikes about 11 inches long and had many, many tiny blooms along the underside of what I call a tongue. They lasted and lasted. It bloomed in March/April I didn't detect any odor, you'll enjoy it.

Did you give it a winter rest? I read that it needs one in order to bloom. Is this true? Also I would love to see a picture of your plant if you don't mind.

In Florida a winter rest is about three weeks of reduced watering. Can't find full bloom pic but this is the tongue about half inch wide, just beginning to open, and orchid as it is today.

Wow. Thank you for sharing your pictures. I absolutely love the bloom. I love the tongue better than the flowers. I can't wait for mine to bloom next year.

Nice acquisition, Chris! I really like the Megaclinium bulbos, too. I hope it grows well for you. The few I have were acquired last fall or winter, and while I grew them drier during the cold months (as I do almost everything) I don't think they need a severe dry period to grow and bloom. YMMV, though.

One little nitpick: the bloom pics you posted do not appear to be your own. Please be sure to properly attribute any photos you use from the web, which would include securing permission from the owners prior to use. If they're already up on the web the easiest way to show them to us is to put a link in your post rather than downloading and reposting the photos.

Ewcia1028 I would rather not say because it's not a retail business it's a personal friend. He had two and I had been begging him for one for a long time and he finally gave it to me. I know that Andy's orchids in California has them.
