Fragrant Bublophyllum - Orchid Board

I am branching out and today received the following Bulbophyllum. I guess I should have done more research regarding their "fragrance"!

Well, I did find that the carunculatum isn't something you want too close to your nose when in flower! But I can't find anything else about the other 2... any help???

My annandalei is blooming right now, it's got an odor to it if I stick my nose right up in the umbel. It's mostly there in the morning, and oddly I can't remember exactly what it smells like right now. Definitely not offensive, but...odd. Maybe kind of earthy or mushroom-funky. I'll try to smell it again tomorrow morning and post my impressions if you want.

A number of the bulbophyllums I've sniffed have similarly unusual though not necessarily unpleasant scents. I've got a pectenveneris in bloom now, too, and my wife thinks it smells like a wet dog (again only up very close and mostly in the morning). Another one I have smells a lot like mothballs to me. A lot of fascinating diversity in this group!

Can't tell you much about habrotinum, since mine hasn't bloomed for me yet. If your carunculatum is too stinky for you then feel free to send it to me.

Did you get those from Dwayne? He sells great plants and is a really nice guy as well.

Yes, Nat these all came from The Dowery. I would agree all of the items I ordered came packed very well and the plants themselves appear to have been grown well. Now if I can keep them alive!

Would you mind providing some pictures of the bulbophyllums you received from Dwayne, please? I've only bought vandas from him in the past, but I agree that he's got some really nice stock and he's a good guy to deal with also.

I purchased some species phals along with the Bulbophyllum. Most were in excellent condition. The B. annandalei has some "weak" pseudo bulbs but should be OK.

It look like the carunculatum is going to flower right?

Yes, it has two spikes... but with the unpotting, shipping and repotting.... we'll have to wait and see what happens. Trust me if there are flowers, there will be pics!!!!!

Thanks for posting the pictures. The curunculatum looks particularly good. Might have to see what else Dwayne's offering right now.

Hmmm... I'd like to post pictures of annandalei in bloom, but I seem to be having some trouble uploading them. I think my files are too big for the server. I guess it's time I install some photo-editing software so I can actually modify file sizes after taking the picture.

I wonder if my camera came with software? I should go check.

Anyway, my annandalei is from Dwayne's current batch. It's the type with the spotted lip and lots of red and pink. Very pretty! Is that the Malaysian form? The biggest umbel I've gotten so far has been a little over 3.75" across, with individual flowers on all umbels averaging about 1.5" long. It's been spiking in waves of 2-4 for about the last 3 months, and has I think 4 active new leads going. Seems like a very vigorous plant. I did have some problems with the early spikes and leads 'aborting' prematurely, but now that I've had it a little longer it's settled down and seems very happy. I suspect it was shocked by going suddenly from Dwayne's nice, humid greenhouse to my dry, air-conditioned house.

I've also gotten several plumatum and a habrotinum from him, and though they haven't bloomed yet they're both very healthy and have lots of new leads starting right now.

I'll put up some pictures when I get that all figured out.
