Growers often assign clonal names to non-awarded plants. It is the only way to identify the best plants out of a group.
However, clonal names are not registered, unless the plant is granted an award by the AOS or another awarding organization. Some never get an award due to some minor flaw (in the judges eyes). Yet, they are still high quality or unusual plants, compared with the majority of plants from that grex ( or species).
It is considered bad manners to change a clonal name, even if unregistered.
