BLACK SPOTS

I HAVE BLACK SPOTS ON A COUPLE OF THE GREEN LEAVES ON 2 OR 3 OF MY ORCHID PLANTS. IS THERE A WAY I CAN TREAT THESE BLACK SPOTS? OR SHOULD I JUST CUT OFF THE LEAVES WITH THE SPOTS? I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO1 HELP!! I DON'T WANT TO HURT MY PLANTS IN ANY WAY. THANK YOU, CHET AND GAYLYN

What type of orchid is it? Do you have a picture you can post here.....it will make it easier for someone to help diagnose the problem.

I too have same problem with the leaves which get black & yellow spots on them. I attached the pictures, hope you can tell me what can be wrong with those leaves.

Dang must be a run on black spots, I as well have one in particular and looks like the top pic of your's Caroline. I use a fungiside on them this a.m. so not sure if this is the trick, hopefully will get more info from this thread .... hey littlefrog ... knowledge respected, what cha' think... My only change I made was moving from a free standing oscillating fan to a ceiling fan and misting more ...

Some black spots are normal on certain orchids. Many oncidiums get small "sunspots" when they have enough light, as do some vandas. Here's a picture of a plant with "normal" sunspots.

Danger signs would be mushy/boggy consistency, spreading, thinning of the leaf at the area of the spot, bad smell, etc.

A picture would really help though!!!

Caroline...your pictures are really small, I can't even really see what's going on. Do you have a larger close-up view?

That looks to be a Pleurothallid you have... it is sometimes common to see some black spots on the leaves, they usually do not do anything. If it is a Masdevallia though, then there could be a problem. Any idea what the name of that plant is? =)

PS: The second picture you posted with the light green spots on the leaves, I would go ahead and cut that one of for safe measures...

Here comes the picture again, hope it is big enough to see. This plant has yellow spots and some darker green spots.

Is there a special fungiside for orchids only or any fungiside will work on orchids?

Caroline, I have had great success with "Garden Spot" fungicide. I grown indoors and from your photo looks like you do as well. This fungicide is my personal preference and know some on the board use Physan 20 which is also a great product. When I use this product I remove the plant from the initial enviroment and put it by itself not to contaminate the others. Good air circulation is important as well as using this in the mornings given an opportunity for the product to work throughout the day without sun damage. Hope this helps.
