Mechanical Damage or Fungus on New Cattleya Growth. What to do? Male
Default Mechanical Damage or Fungus on New Cattleya Growth. What to do?

Hello all,

I have a black spot on the new growth of my Cattleya that I am trying to get to root. It has no roots now.

I am not sure if it is a bruise I made by accident on the new growth, or a rot of some sort. Either way, should I remove this section? I think there is still plenty of growing leaf on this new growth even if I do. Or, should I wait? Unfortunately, I also knocked an eye off that was just starting to grow.

Thank you

Hard to say, but I'd leave it alone and keep a close eye on it. If the blackened area expands, then it's time for action.

This sometimes happens because of calcium deficiency and sometimes from lack of water. Without roots the plant can't take up either. If you're lucky it will make new roots soon.

I disagree about the calcium deficiency in this case.

When that happens, the newly-growing tissue literally dies and rots, terminating the growth. That photo shows that new tissues above (beyond) that point.
