Default Cattleya maxima strange growth

I just discovered this on an old pseudobulb of my Cattleya maxima. She has never flowered for me yet. Se has a very big strong new growth that I hope will give a sheath one of these days. I could swear this growth wasn't there a few days ago. Any idea of what it could be? Could it be a spike?

This species normally produces a sheath, but sometimes they bloom without one!

If you grow a large number of Catts, you will eventually have one or two. I've had Catts with multiple leads have a sheath but the next growth over will send out a spike with no sheath.

I think Catts have a sense of humor.

Quite a few of my Catts have sheaths, but when you hold them up to light, it looks like a new leaf in there instead of buds.
