Pleione virus

I was wondering if I could get some input on an affliction that killed my Pleione Maculatas last year and have started doing the same again.

I took it to my local orchid society and the members weren't familiar, I assume as Pleione's aren't common here. It appears as some sort of bacteria or fungus that eventually browns the leaf and plant, I've tried to trim off the leaf and apply cinnamon but the browning returns.

If anyone's seen or dealt with this on their plants I'd love to know a safe treatment I can apply as I have a habit of choosing a cure that's worse than the problem. The pictures are of P Maculata & Praecox.

It seems to happen at any time, with these they only just came out of dormancy a few weeks back.

Possible calcium deficiency? I don't grow Pleione.

I had something like this happen to my Cattleyas many years ago. I now make certain that I give them extra Calcium as it helps strengthen the cells which will help deter their susceptibility to fungus and bacterial issues. Unfortunately, Calcium is used in building new cells and will not protect the old cells so only new growth is helped by the addition.

I would look into buying a systemic fungicide to put a stop to this. In the meantime, cut an inch below the brown on the leaves and, using a cotton ball (or anything else), wipe the entire plant with isopropyl alcohol except for any roots. Do this twice a day for the next few days, until you stop seeing the infection and until you can begin treating with the systemic fungicide. Treat any other orchids that were near this or the other infected ones. Keep any infected plants away from all the others and in a dry, warm area, preferably with some air movement. Start giving your plants Cali-magic or some other source of Calicum (if the orchids are outside, even milk will do).
