Who keeps outbidding me on eBay? - Orchid Board

Somebody keeps outbidding me for Psychilis. Who in the world keeps outbidding me? Why would anybody want Psychilis so much? What's so great about them? The flowers are few, small and plain. The plant itself is rather spindly. They don't have nice fat pseudobulbs like Encyclias... and they don't have nice fleshy leaves like Brassavolas. So why do I keep getting outbid?

Maybe it's one of you OrchidBoarders who keeps outbidding me? If so, then here's your chance to explain yourself! And... to be my friend...

Of course perhaps it's not very "rational" for somebody who bids for Psychilis to publicly explain what's so great about them. Because... a good explanation will increase the demand (aka increase the chances of being outbid). Then again, markets work because an increase in demand usually results in an increase in supply. Usually?

Friends? In an auction? How long have you been doing the EBay thing? You seem to be trying to interject feelings into a completely rational situation. That's a sure way to get your feelings hurt.....

I went and looked them up on IOSPE. They are pretty! Which one did you miss?

I've been doing the ebay thing for years. And each time I lose an orchid I cry. A lot.

Well, I am not competing for those. However, if you venture into Paphs, Phrags, Vandaceous or anything else I might be interested in (some 10-15 other genera) - WATCH OUT.

You really don't have to worry about me competing for Paphs or Phrags. Vandaceous orchids are another story! I do love me some Aerangis... and some Neo hybrids... and Sarcochilus... and Rhynchostylis... and...

Are you counting Dendrophylax as Vandaceous? A couple months ago on ebay I picked up a commount of Dendrophylax fawcettii. I carefully separated the seedlings and remounted them. They are hanging in a tupperware covered in clear plastic next to a bright window. Surprisingly... even though the house is unheated... they started putting out new roots.

Anyone interested in growing low maintenance orchids outdoors in a Caribbean or similar climate could be interested Psychilis and its hybrids. That would be the rational motivation, but I think we are all aware that rational does not necessarily apply to human behavior concerning orchids or auctions. If you want something unusual and in spike, get a crowbar and open your wallet.

It's not a fair competition if I don't know that you're bidding on an orchid that I might want. So just e-mail me the link whenever you bid on a Vandaceous orchid!

Then when you outbid me I'll be like

Actually, I wouldn't bid against you. I'll just share any thoughts that I might have on that particular orchid. Really... you can trust me.
