The orchids seem to be really happy in that set up! I hope you will give us yearly updates. It is going to keep looking better and better as the orchids grow larger.

They do don't they? Im honestly surprised how well this set up is working out.
I chose the spot kind of at random, and everything is definitely over potted.
I'm not sure if the mini cattleya get enough light to flower... ill have to see...

I'll definitely give yearly updates. I'm sure a few more will follow this year.
I still need to fill in the left sides of the planter... not sure with what. I've got a mini oncidium that's struggling... maybe.....
And of course updates when they flower. If they flower.

I add in an orchid.
The right side now has twinkle-esque.oncidium NOID from Trader Joe's.
It was languishing in its pot. I figured it might do better in here.

I'm really terrible with oncidiums. I'm trying but they really do seem to hate me.

Almost all filled in. I've got space for maybe two more orchids.
Maybe lol

Let me start this post by detailing my past year with oncidiums.
They were the first orchid I dare buy after a couple years of success with a couple phals.
I bought 5 over the course of a few months.
They declined quickly.
Except the sharry baby. I think it might be impossible to kill it.

First the psuedobulbs shriveled severely. Then they flattened like cardboard, and became sort of limp.
They shot out new growths, and new roots. The growths rotted. The roots desiccated. The new growths accordioned severely.
I figured out largely that I needed to water more often. Among a few other things.
All five are still with me but have a long road of recovery ahead.

But this one. A mini twinkle like oncidium. A strange creamy greencolour. It was a large plant and had at least 15 new growths on it. Over time each new growth rotted off one by one.
Even after I figured out what I was doing wrong I still couldn't make it happy. The growths kept rotting.
So! In a last ditch effort to save it I decided to put it in this planter.
When I unpotted it i discovered that it wasn't a large plant at all. But had been a bunch of seedlings in one pot.

Anyway. I'm here to do a happy dance and report some success finally.
It's a tiny plant now. But I'm pleased to report that the growth rot has stopped. And, despite the neglect in the beginning, two of the remaining growths have turned into round fat psuedobulbs!
My first ever on an oncidium. As you can see from the picture they have a bit to go before it's psuedobulbs are their former size. But.....
Success!!!

I'm learning!
I really honestly think my downfall with oncidiums was "let them dry slightly between watering".
Confused the heck out of me. I've now realised I need a more open and airy mix, that I could water more often.
In all honesty my phals get drier in between watering lol.
I'm excited though!
No blooms from mine lol.... good luck with yours!

Went into Trader Joe's... they had the same mini oncidium that I nearly killed. The one I put in this planter.
I do have that side to fill in so I figured... why not?
Like last time it's a huge plant with lots of spikes. And I suspect that this one is also a bunch of small plants in a pot.
It's got 27 psuedobulbs and 9 spikes.
17 new growths and 5 almost matured growths.

It's scent is like cupcakes, and the colour is the same as the other. Opening yellow and orange, fading to cream, green, and orange.

Let's hope I do better this time.

A quick update!

Two of the three cattleyas are doing very well and continue to grow strong.
One is not.

Previously a NOID, but now consistently available with tags! A pink cattleya with a strong fragrance and rather large flowers.

It's name is Lc. Star Parade 'Volcano Queen'. Which is a cross between Tokyo Magic and walkeriana.

It refuses to grow roots! Which is surprising to me since it's half walkeriana....

Maybe it wants to be potted?

Meanwhile its growing a new growth and sending out a sheath....
Probably won't result in blooms.

My old oncidium still has those fat little psuedobulbs I grew. But it's alot darker than my new oncidium.

My phals are growing! No spikes though....

And my new paph has started two growths!

Overall I'm pleased.
I'm thinking of adding supplemental lighting... everything is a little dark.
