Hey folks, looking for some advice on how to deal with this.

I just received an order from a local/reputable grower (not to name names for now). It was my second order from this grower given I was gifted with some of the most vigorous plants from my first purchase.

At the second I unpacked the package, I started the hydrating process since I want to see if I can unpot and mount them. On one plant, after the unpot (and yes there is an active root tip coming out of the stem), I found the roots are not in their best shape.

I emailed the photos to the grower, and ran into a wall with them say a. The plants were fine at our greenhouse, and b. You should not have un-potted it if you don’t see the new roots coming out.

I want to hear some advice on this forum to see if people think that I was too nit picky and should not have taken the plant out of the pot, or this was a reasonable disappointment on the root system.

See photos attached.

Appreciate your help!

You have some good roots there so the orchid should be fine. I would pinch off the roots that are not good, let it sit for a few days for the roots to heal (watering once a day), then pot it in your chosen medium (or mount it).

I wouldn't repot orchids in winter. Wait until they're making lots of new roots.

I agree, the first sign of new roots is a good time to repot. Only emergency measures need apply otherwise. Though it can be a good idea to peek at the rootmass (just peek not completely remove all media) if in doubt.

Your plant doesn’t have the best root system but it’s certainly serviceable until some new ones grow. Adding bottom heat will help speed root growth.

Thanks all! I will close this one. Yea I prob over reacted a bit, well I also had very high expectations. Also I told the grower that I overreacted. It’s a small circle/community anyway so, happy holidays everyone.

I will work on nursing them back.

“Old-timers” here have heard this before, but get a bottle of Kelpak Biostimulant and follow the instructions for reviving an “iffy” plant. You’ll not be sorry. Through midnight tonight, the code “5bonus” will get you $5 off, too.

Aha! Thanks Ray for the reply and the coupon. I already brought one from you a few months back. And this round I googled a lot of your reply on the regime and the usage. Given I have a few other orchids with root tips poping up, I will do a slight overdose to “flare them up”. And prob keep it for the next watering as well (2 wks apart)
