Miranda Orchids
Default Miranda Orchids

I placed an order from the distribution list with Miranda orchids for the following plants.

1- Cattleya amethystoglossa aurea ‘Light Yellow’ x self 2” – $35.00
1- Cattleya amethystoglossa coerulea 4N x sib 2” – $25.00
1- Cattleya elongata x outcross 2” – $30.00

The box they showed up in didn't make sense, how could three plants fit in there? The answer, all were taking up about 1" of their 2" pot. They can be considered "healthy" but the amethystogloassas in particular are very poorly established.

Inflation? lol. How do you fill less than 50% of a 2" pot and sell it for $35?

Its unlikely I will buy from him again.

I know I have posted 3 bad reviews and only 1 good review recently..

I need to mention that last week I received an incredible order from Krull Smith.

Cattleya Dominiana $35
Cattleya Poseidon Lake $25
Cattleya Fascelis $20

Same price as Miranda but these were all large plants that were in spike / bud. Not rare species cultivars but nice primary hybrids. Huge shout out to Krull Smith. (forgot to take pics before I put them away)

I have had a great experience with Krull Smith too!

I know you are down on miranda but the plants you go seem fantastic, small but fantastic, and I have been searching high and low for Cattleya elongata. But where do you see the availability?? His website does not have anything currently.
Listed it seems...

I do have good taste, I will give you that, kidding.

His list had many more great rare species for sure. There is a mailing list, don't remember how I got on it. It came out June 24 so probably some stuff left, I'd reach out through the website

I've ordered plants from Miranda Orchids several times. Granted, the plants as received weren't particularly large, but those which have bloomed out have been superior. The only thing which kept me from ordering from him recently, is the lack of bench space in my GH. Recently, I purchased gasoline at a station on the Alaska highway.... $2.49C/liter! Everything has gotten more expensive.

Claw, I certainly understand the size issue - particularly with amethystoglossa, a famously slow species to bloom - those will probably be a 5+ year project. Please feel free to correct me, but aren't those very unusual/difficult to find color forms? For me, I'm willing to pay a premium for things that I really want that are not available elsewhere. (SVO doesn't sell absolutely everything and that is a tragedy since they're amazing quality AND always affordable!!!)

I just received my own Miranda order today and personally am quite excited. I mainly order things from him that I simply cannot find otherwise or that offer superior breeding lines I know will supercede much of our domestic options. I'll post my own thread soon.

Mr Miranda responded very quickly and offered to replace the two Amethystoglossas, as he agreed they were particularly small. He also reminded me that in the email announcing the price list he had explained the seedlings were small because they were basically leftovers from other shipments. I did not read the text of the message in my excitement to open the list so that is totally my fault. I asked the coerulea to be replaced, it really is not just small but also weak.

Learnings: Read the email. Miranda Orchids stands behind their plants and has a lot of satisfied customers

Thanks everyone!

Again, so happy for you!!

He must be emailing a ton today - I ordered two L. milleri seedlings and both were quite small. Established, but small. I didn't even ask, but he told me he would send two more that come in the next shipment from Brazil because he wasn't satisfied with the size of them. I, of course, said that would be great! He is wonderful.

Unrelated: I think you should lead a webinar on orchid buyer advocacy LMAO, you seem to have quite the gift!

Thanks! I am a procurement manager for a living so that should explain a lot of the above. I have to say, orchid sellers are a pretty honorable group considering the cost to fix an error.

Oh good, I have never bought anything from Miranda but I have seen his lectures and I really love his work and what I can glean of his personality so I'm glad it ended up being positive.

I'm definitely gonna get on that list...

His plants are small but healthy. Most you can't get anywhere else in the US.
