Perplexing Vanda roots
Default Perplexing Vanda roots

Hello

I have a V. Jiraprapa x Ascda. Tubtim Velvet that is doing well, and has new spike beginning. When I got it in March, many of the roots were dry and shrivelly. It has since shed many of the old roots and is EXPLODING with new ones.

However, half of the new roots are growing out and upwards. Every vanda I've seen has roots growing almost straight down.

My question is, is this a sign of something I'm doing wrong? Perhaps a humidity issue? Never seen so many vanda roots growing up before.

Edit: forgot to mention, it is growing in a hanging basket with a tiny bit of moss stuck in.

I've noticed that my vanda roots follow the direction that I spray water / fertilizer

Mine grow in all sorts of directions. I wouldn't worry about yours growing upwards.

Don't be surprised if your roots start branching either. I've seen an old root produce 3 - 4 new root tips.

Yeah it really depends, I have some Vandas that grow straight down, and others that put out roots that go in a nearly straight line to the side.

I have a couple of them that do that too. I don't think it's a [problem...just the nature of the plant.
