Default My Tokyo Blue Vanda

Found this beauty during a trip to Florida, I wasn't totally sure it would survive the cool, rainy climate of the Northwest! To my surprise, it sent out a spike last November. I have been crossing my fingers since then because it has been quite cold and rainy in the NW this winter. It has been blooming, 5 blossoms and a bud!!! Although the color is not as intensely blue as it should be (probably from lack of sun and warmth), it is still quite lovely! Hope the flowers will develop more the blue hue as they mature!

Hi Flexdc,
My vanda doesn't have the luxury of having it roots hanging free since I don't have the time to water it everyday. I grow it in a pot on a south window, water it once/week like my cattleyas. To my surprise, it seems doing OK being in a pot. It bloomed once before in June/July of last year but most of the buds were blasted, probably from being moved around too much. It stays put on the same spot this time and the last of its 6 buds opened today. This is my first attempt of growing Vanda in pot.

Liana, Bkfsrs, Nikkik, Flexdc,
Thank you. The color and the spots seems to get more defined as the flowers mature...

Hmm, I've been wanting to try my hand at a Vanda, but cannot really deal with mounted plants and the daily watering. But maybe I will try one potted and see what happens. I'm curious if anyone can recommend a vanda type that might be suitable to pot culture? I've got a Neostylis Lou Sneary, which I figured was as close as I could get to a vanda in my grow conditions.

As far as I know, all blue/purple color Vandas have Vanda coerulea in their background, which in general tolerate cool temperatures pretty well.

I would try a blue vanda first.
