Love that blue lip. Taken against the sky, the flowers look almost ethereal.

Have you noticed a higher bloom rate with your non-vandaceous when using hydroculture over bark/sphag, etc...

Bud: The plants are grown on a 4th story balcony that only gets rain within the first few feet if any. Anything the orchids get is purely what i give them!

I wouldnt worry about that Bud, unless ever last one of his orchids will be sitting on the ground or a low bench.... lol

Thank You, Picotee !!!!!
the white against the sky is really ethereal....

@Houston....a balcony in your grow zone is delightful....hanging Vandas and sorts can happen

@Cristiano....right....ground level or bench level cannot be spared from the floods....I am glad for the balcony...and as for me...I am on the 7th floor, heh

Vascostylis Viboon Velvet

."it is gentler and conducive to growing orchids= in fact you can have them outdoors under a shady tree..."

I live just east of Houston and believe me our climate is far from gentle and as for growing them outdoors, well, the winter before last was very cold and we have been known to see snow. Our summers are closer to 100 degrees and many orchids are not happy with these temps. I regularly lose, especially, thin leaved varieties.
Oh, and I do have a Vasco. Viboon Velvet :D

compared to the east coast...Huston is a better climate to grow orchids....

Vascostylis Viboon Velvet

I had a GH when I lived in Michigan and I think I did somewhat better there. I feel I could control my environment more to the liking of the plants. Even there I put them outdoors in the summer.

Beverly, did you purchase yours online or locally? I am having a difficult time trying to track one down! I am planning on taking the orchids inside if the temps are going to be below 40-45 Fahrenheit.

Bud 09-18-2012 10:11 PM

But of course, GH is the best way to grow orchids, Beverly....its ideal because you can control the temperature and humidity inside....I hope you get back your GH again.

These blooms are fabulous!! :D

I'm excited to see this plant doing well in S/H as I have a Vascostylis Viboon Velvet in a basket too and it's been dragging along for 2 years, blasting buds here and there. Perhaps, I'll try mine in S/H and see if it appreciates it more than my less than optimal spraying. Thank you for posting your awesome blooms!!
