I must say, ever since I started a discipline care regimen my vandas just keep spiking. As soon as one spike blooms are finished it literally pushes out another in about 2 weeks. This goes for all my other orchid species, except the strict biannual ones and the once a year ones. I did exactly what you say you're thinking of doing, and those Vandas have definitely grown and sent out roots, but no blooms in about 4 months +. :(

That is what I am afraid of. This one is usually a very reliable bloomer but got some burning from my new plant light in the spring. It last bloomed in May, so I'm watching for it's next spike. I'm hoping the damage hasn't prevented it. But the plant is very awkward, it is large and has twisted around which makes it difficult when I want to water it. It is hard to even put it in the bath tub.

I keep forgetting that you are in a place where you don't have the luxury of keeping orchids outdoors all year round. :( You might have to divide it or take some off the bottom half.

Very pretty flowers!
I think I need more vandas. Yours are so pretty.

Carpe Diem 08-22-2012 07:40 PM

Beautiful flowers, white, blue lip AND fragrant...what more could one ask for!? You always have something blooming, you must have the magic touch. :)

Thank You, Leafmite!

Thanks, CarpeDiem! its not a magic touch: it is just following instructions and find the correct culture for the plant and stick to it. It is the summer warmer months and flowers are always in bloom....all my Vandas are just flowering

To me the vandas are the easiest to grow.
Bud's always look happy.

I think so to some extent...they have some in the specie that require extra attention. But somehow I find all orchids relatively easy once you know what they want or need. So far the hardest one for me is the Aggregatum (OMG!); that is the definition of sensitive in getting it to bloom! :(

You are right. You just have to learn what they want.

After hearing about the spiking habits of Vanda's I have decided to try one out. I've been searching this Vanda forum for the right "match" and I have found it. Time to call the local greenhouses!

Wonderful blooms Bud.

Cheers

Thank You !

I have seen these orchid sold on Ebay bloom size at a very reasonable price from a grower in Florida....
I advice to get the well established mature plants than the seedlings....little plants can have so many things happen to them in a span of four to five years that you need to care for them before they bloom(bugs, fungi and mechanical damages)....I just dont want to take the chance
