Vanda roots VERY long
Default Vanda roots VERY long

hello, all. I just received a vanda in the mail and the roots are really long, say 3 feet. In shipping they were wrapped loosely around the base of the plant but I unfurled them and let them hang free. Did I do the right thing? This is my first mail-order vanda. Thanks in advance for your replies.

Hi and welcome to Orchidboard
Most of my vandas are hanging just that way. Others are in baskets with nothing else. Vandas are water gluttons! They need to be misted, heavily, quite often.

Which vanda did you get?
By the way, where in FL are you?

Please drop a note in our Introductions forum...our members would like to say hi

Thanks for the welcome. I look forward to learning so much from others on this board. I live in JAX, so it is SILLY not to try my hand at orchids here in FL! What a great opportunity. My family purchased the "sansai blue" for me as a gift for Mom's Day. What a great way to get started, no?

Your family has great taste!
That is a wonderful "starter"

Are there many orchid growers near you?

Welcome!

Jacksonville is a nice play to grow orchids... in winter, it may get a little too cold for them though...

Most of us who grow Vandas have roots like yours and Sue's... they like to be watered frequently and in higher amounts of sun (not full sun though)...

You Vanda Sansai Blue is a VERY popular blue hybrid... that was a great choice! Here is a Google Image search for it:
