Default Unkai, bean leaf

Neofinetia falcata Unkai (Sea of Clouds)
New World Orchids
  • Foliage: bean leaf.
  • Tsuke (form created at leaf connection): Ocean wave.
  • Blooms: Flowers oddly shaped with forward facing spur!
  • Distinquishing feature: A bit larger than Seikai, and the forward facing spur sets this one apart.
  • Fragrance: Not sure yet!

Growing Conditions: Winchester, UK
  • Grown on a windowsill. (medium light)
  • Humidity: 70%- 100%
  • Temp: High 25C, Low 10C (Cool - Intermediate)
  • Really good air circulation
  • Rain water, misting daily or every few days.
  • Green Jungle Orchid Foods
And, here is my little Unkai...

Ah, there it is! You'll have to post a pic of this when it blooms. I believe the flowers are like Sekai, but bigger leaves.

I think the flowers are weird like Sekai and are carried in a cluster at the top of the spike. However, the colour of the flowers for Unkai is plain white, whereas Sekai has pink (to varying degrees) flowers.

I just really hope one of them blooms for me!

Nice pic. I really like that pot with the plant. It's a good combination.

So are the moss balls solid or hollow when you use these pots?

Cheers.

Jim, thanks very much! That one is hollow. The moss that you see on the top there is pretty much all the moss that there is. Some of the other pots (mostly the smaller ones) do not have the hollow ball on top, simply because they are too small for it to work, and the smaller pots dry out quicker in any case.

My humidity may dip down to 70% at times, but is generally in the 80%-90% (sometimes more) range, so I find that too much moss keeps the roots too wet as the moss takes nearly a week to dry out.

I water these once a week in summer, and will occasionally mist the aerial roots in the mornings throughout the week. (I just make daily rounds each morning to mist my mounted plants and also mist any others that I think need it....)
