Oh wow, that is cheap~!!!

Tindo, have you heard anything about how effective they are: like how many gallons they can handle and how many degrees they can lower the temp, when modded for a terrarium??

Caudata.org, the forum on salamanders is big on this issue, Caudata.org Newt and Salamander Forum - Search Results
Reason being that many salamanders require cold environments. I think thats where I read it first.

1hp? Wasn't that a bit of overkill?

Nope.. in fact I wish I had a chiller 4 times more powerful as I can only keep the temp at 71F to 74F. I would like to be able to really pull the temp down at night to set blooming better.

I just set up a 1/15 HP JBJ Arctica chiller with ~120 gal/h pump with water running over a 13x16 inch rock face at 45gal/h, with fan blowing on the cold water. Total water volume around 2 gal, in 90 gal terrarium. I only need to cool from 90F to 78-80F, set chiller temperature to 60F and it cools in 15 minutes, with chiller running maybe 50% of time. Heat input into the terrarium are 4x80W T5s plus room temp of thus far up to 90F.

My chiller pulls down the water temp to about 50F water temperature in about an hour of continuous operation, but have not tried to run it longer to see absolute minimum that can be reached. Supposedly it can go down to 32F.

I don't do night pull-down, b/c for my application room temperature is sufficiently low.

My chiller is new, so possibly the older 1HP chiller is not at peak operating conditions, or is not designed to pull down the water to the lower temperature.
