Default KLN and MSU/Dyna-Gro

Hello all;

New to S/H. I've decided to take the plunge after seeing the collection of a fellow planted aquarium member who also is an orchidaholic. My plants look so pathetic in comparison.

Anyway, when converting to S/H and watering with nutrients, do you use both KLN and MSU or Dyna-Gro or do KLN first then switch to MSU after so many watering/weeks/months?

Thanks.
Cheers.
Jim

Hi Jim. I pre-soak my LECA in a KLN solution for 24 hours before using. Then I use that KLN solution for the first watering. After that I switch to MSU. I've used DynaGro also, but I think I'm seeing better results from the MSU.

The K-L-N is a rooting concentrate intended to boost rooting action in orchids. The "MSU mix" is a formulation of nutrients, and micro nutrients, that varies whether you use "pure water" (R.O., distilled or rain water) or domestic (well or city) water only in that the blend for pure water contains minerals not found in the pure water. One is NOT a substitute for the other. I don't grow S/H but the principle is the same. I mix the MSU solution as per instructions for 125ppm Nitrogen and then add 2 drops per gallon of the K-L-N. Hope this helps.

I do the exact same as Ross. I mix both the K-L-N and the MSU. I add about 1/4 teaspoon of K-L-N to a gallon of water and I think 2 teaspoons of MSU.

Thanks for the info. I understood that the KLN is a rooting hormone and MSU is nutrient, I just wasn't sure if people make a definate switch to just MSU or just scale back the KLN to push root growth.

I guess I should have just asked that way.

Cheers.

I do pretty much the same except I only add the K-L-N about once a month to my regular watering schedule. I use MSU every watering. I use the S/H method, fill the pot to the top completly and let it drain. My phrags love it, and my intergeneric oncidium plants grow like weeds in it. Most of my orchids are in S/H except my zygos. They are in a coir mix except for one which I tried in S/H. It is in bud for the second time this year. As soon as it opens more I will post a pic.
