If its Cattleyas you are growing, I tend to let the skewer (= media in bottom and middle of pot) get pretty close to dry. If the sides are drying too fast and centre staying wet, maybe your plants...

I've been using this method for a long time and even if you think the pot is lightweight and dry, it often isn't in the centre and bottom. I quit causing root rot when I started using skewers.

That was my question too. Can't see the point of the skewers if they aren't being pulled out???? I found my pots often felt light but when I checked the skewer, it was still damp near the bottom...
