RoseSD, the "moss mound" approach is the classic Japanese method for potting Neos. I suspect that this is not something that you want to do as a beginner with the species... you can do some research...

Exposed roots on a Neofinetia falcata are normal and good... it's a little Vanda. The roots need air, and some drying between waterings. If the medium is shredded bark, it may tend to stay too wet....
