Thanks for your reassurance. A minute ago, I had a look at that spike. It is definitely doomed. Fingers crossed for another one. I haven’t had any spikes on it, ever. I bought it about 4 years ago. ...

Thanks Roberta. We had strong winds that kept knocking over the pots. This orchid isn’t supposed to flower till September. If I had noticed that spike earlier, I would have moved the pot to a more...

The growth is just under the lowest leaf. Would that mean this growth is a basal keiki?

Yellowing growth on cymbidium

My cymbidium hybrids are starting to produce flower spikes, but the spike on one plant (Pure Sarah Snowball) is bigger but more yellow than all the others. It looks a bit dodgy - almost as if it...

Is this a flower spike?

Now that autumn has brought a drop in temperatures, I’ve started checking my phals for flower spikes. This morning, I found the new growth circled in the photo. Could anyone tell me if it’s a spike?

Help I.d. Please.

I’m growing an orchid from the keiki of a mystery orchid a friend received for Christmas. She thought it was a phalaenopsis. I’m pretty sure it’s some kind of dendrobium, and I’m hoping it’s a...

So it’s a keiki! Fantastic! So that grasshopper, or whatever it was, was a propagation agent! Now all I have to do is to wait for both the keiki and the parent plant to think about producing some...

Update

New growth has started halfway up the stem, just below the gouge and above aerial roots. From advice here, I was waiting for new basal growth, so I’m surprised. This doesn’t look like just a root. ...

Kitchen twist tie

I cut a length of kitchen twist tie. I was at my wits’ end with phalaenopsis and Oncidium orchids escaping from their pots. So far, it doesn’t seem to have harmed the plants.

Another question

Thanks. I have another question on this: If the plant produces healthy new basal growth, and if I then cut below its (pictured) stem roots, and pot up the dead bit, would the newly potted...

But what about these roots?

Thanks for your reply.

Regarding these new roots along the stem, they look like they should belong to keikis, but there are no keikis. When these roots are longer, should I be able to cut the...

This is what I mean about phals at my supermarket.

Just took these pics of this $36.00 supermarket phal. It had one, half-chewed flower left on it. The phals with fuller spikes were $56.00.
