I've never tried flasking seriously untill now. And i never tried the green pod method. So does anyone think this sedirea japonica seed pod looks ready?

Do you know how many months before it is ripened and the seeds are mature? YOU want to wait just before its ripens before you harvest the pod. So if it ripens in 10 months time don't harvest till about 8 or 9 months to make sure the seeds inside will be good. Keep a eye on it till it just slightly turns yellow on the end just before it splits and you should have no problem.

I don't know anything about the gestation period for those, but my general rule-of-thumb is to wait until either end of the capsule starts to yellow.

Ditto what Cntry and Ray said - watch for the yellow that starts at the end of the stem.

Good luck in your flasking endeavors!

Don't make the same mistake I made and harvest it too early. =( I was just so excited to try green pod flasking for my first time. I don't think many/any of the seeds were mature/viable in my Phal seed pod. From what others have told me, watch for signs such a yellowing of the end, softening of the pod, deepening of the divots, drooping from the stem, etc.

I also wait until I see a yellowing of the seed pod. Then I cut it of and sterilize the pot with a spray.

Thanks everyone. The pods are still on the plants. I have been staring at them in anticipation. I already have the flasks made. no contamination on them after 2 weeks. I'm using p723 from phytotech for the media. on another note i found a site that sells polypropylene jars and lids in bulk that should save me some serious cash if i ever decide to go flask happy in the future.

Two weeks to go (or more) and it's flasking time woo hoo

This is the beginning of your excitement time as you watch for the pods to start yellowing just a bit. Then its time to flask and the nerves really can get to you. This time you watch for germination and to make sure there is no contamination as you wait for those tiny signs of something is happening and you begin to watch them grow. Good Luck.
