Maxillaria tonsbergii

This plant has been outside all year, only sheltered during frosts. Six blooms open, one more yet to come. It's a big, sprawling plant, with leaves about 20 inches long. Big blossoms, too, for a Maxillaria.

Lovely!

Catasetum? Do you mean maxillaria. Gorgeous flower!

fishmom 11-25-2017 09:54 PM

Yes, maxillaria, I tried to edit but can't move the post or change the title. Never post while sleepy!!!

katrina 11-26-2017 05:50 AM

Ha! Looks like you caught it at the same time I was posting. Yea, I hear ya on the sleepy...my brain begins shutting down around 7pm.

It is a gorgeous flower and I haven't done maxies in years because I can't keep them cool enough to prevent the uglies on the foliage but this one tempts me. How are you growing it? Is it at all heat tolerant? My summer temps routinely hit the upper 80s and 90s.

This plant grew outdoors in the Bay Area, CA, so warm-hot days (in the 90's often) but cooler (60's) most summer nights. We are close to the water, so high night humidity. It has been outside until now, so nights are currently in the 45-55 degree F. range, mostly on the higher end. I haven't found a great deal of info on this species, but I have a note that an average minimum temp. is 42 F. It comes from the Venezuelan montane area, if that helps.

Shoot, I thought this was a species I'm unfamiliar with!! lol

Apologies, Steve! I'm feeling pretty lame!

katrina 11-27-2017 05:13 AM

Hmmm...might have to give this one a try. Thanks for info!

Ha! No worries! I know I've accidentally posted in the wrong forum a time or two.
