Maxillaria Ben Berliner--too many pseudobulbs?
1 Attachment(s)
I have had this Max. Ben Berliner for 7 months. It has many new pseudobulbs, but they are all growing from the base of the plant, and the leaves are much shorter than the previous leaves. I suspect I've been over-fertilizing it? I have tried it in various high-light situations, but in the highest, it shows signs of stress. Any thoughts welcome.
I've grown a Max. tenuifolia with great success for more than a year, but the Ben Berliner is a riddle. Any cultural specifics (perhaps by comparison/contrast to the Max ten) on the BB would be helpful! |
I got mine from Carter & Holmes. They still have it listed, with cultivation information.
Maxillaria Ben Berliner at Carter and Holmes Orchids Be sure to scroll down and click on the tab Additional Information. This link will probably disappear when they sell out. I save Web pages for all the plants I buy so I can look at them later. It is a cool to intermediate grower, cooler than in many homes. It likes high humidity, higher than in many homes. Successful growers posting here on Orchid Board have said they stand it in a dish of rain or reverse osmosis water all the time. It is not a high-light orchid. Shorter leaves on orchids can mean higher light than previous, insufficient water or low humidity. If you use the Search function in the top maroon menu, and enter the name, you can find previous posts on this plant. Northern Wisconsin is so beautiful! Thanks! Wonderful info! I was giving it far too much light.

To me it looks like all the new growths are far from mature, too soon to judge how tall they will get. Until you have grown an orchid for more than a year without changing conditions you really don't have a good idea how it will perform. Check the best culture recommendations you can find and give the poor plant a chance to settle in and perform.
