First bloom from this better-gro baggie.
Changes color from ochre to a pleasant yellow orange. |
Very pretty. I got one myself. It spined with only one bloom. Please tell me how you are growing it. I looked it up but would like to hear your method.
|
I only got one bloom on mine too so I am also curious to know what you're doing.
Mine seems to be staying in a more rusty-orange color. Opened maybe 4-5 days ago? |
I'm not sure if I'm doing anything special, but below are my growing conditions:
Next to a SE facing window with blinds. receives filtered morning light. Supplemental light is nearby (just a 40 Watt compact fluorescent light bulb from target) is on from morning to evening. The spike is leaning to the light bulb - perhaps light levels are key? My apartment is set to 75 - 80 F, but the room where this orchid sits seems to flux... bad air circulation... I have no idea what the humidity levels are in my room, but I have about 20 orchids next to it, many with saucers filled with water. I water it about twice a week with tap water supplemented with miracle gro orchid fertilizer (1 tsp per 1 quart of water). I let some water collect on the saucer, and let it dry over 3 days or so. When it dries out, I water it again. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - I have noticed that the p-bulb of the one that flowered is twice as large/longer than the other ones. It's about 4 inches? (minus the leaf) while the other ones are 2 inches max. Some of the 2 inch p-bulbs have sheaths but they have not bloomed and are sending up new p-bulbs. |
Mine is in similar set up. The window is South and there is a Maple tree so, I leave a LED on it...I'm watering every other day. Like Salixx, I think mine was spiking when I got it. Mine has been blooming maybe three weeks and it still orange.
|
The color description may just be lighting and/or perception. It started off a rusty-orange color as Salixx mentioned. After a day or two, it settled down to an orange to yellow-orange hue. Perhaps light levels influence color? Maybe color/number of blooms gets better as the plant matures? Maybe they're from different seedlings?
This is my first bloom for this plant so I'm afraid I can't be of much help... sorry! |

It all finally opened!
Took a photo while I smoke some brisket... |
I like the cheery yellow-orange color, and I love the starry shape.
|
5 times as pretty as mine!
|
Goodness, that is beautiful.
